TRICHY: Trichy corporation has developed a new artificial multi-sports turf on the terrace of multi-level car parking (MLCP) on West Boulevard Road. A private agency has been entrusted to monetise the facility. Students from corporation schools will be allowed to use the turf for free.
The turf, spread over 7,200sqft, is fenced on all sides. Officials said that floodlights were installed to allow users to play cricket and football even at night.
The MLCP was built to provide parking for cars and two-wheelers, but did not fetch the desired solution as on-street parking continues to choke arterial roads. So, corporation leased a portion of the MLCP's terrace to Trichy-based E2M Games and Turfs Private Limited. The agency has developed the turf at its own expense, costing 40 lakh. The local body has provided only the space and a portion of the MLCP to park vehicles for users.
"Based on a clause introduced in the agreement to monetise the corporation's property, the private agency has agreed to allow students from corporation's schools and city-based achievers to use the turf for free or at a concessional price," an official said.
Since many corporation schools lack dedicated playgrounds, the school managements will be encouraged to opt for the turf to host sports events. For others, the turf will be available for 900 per hour. The local body said that the turf is expected to find takers among young population in congested residential areas.
