Dimapur: The Govt of India has recognised 19 notified tribal local dialects of Nagaland in the recruitment process of Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS) in the postal department.
Nagaland’s lone Lok Sabha MP S Supongmeren Jamir, who initiated and pursued the recruitment policy reform on recruitment of GDS in Nagaland, called the Centre’s decision ‘historic’.
In a statement on Thursday, Jamir said this decision is a significant acknowledgment of the linguistic and cultural identity of the Naga people and will help ensure greater inclusivity, representation, and participation of the youth of Nagaland in the GDS recruitment process.
He added that the GDS recruitment was previously open on a broader all-India basis, but this initiative ensured that the recruitment process in Nagaland will now duly recognise and incorporate the notified tribal languages, thereby safeguarding the interests and opportunities of the indigenous people of the state.
The MP hailed the office memorandum issued by the postal department on May 21, recognising proficiency and knowledge of the notified tribal local languages/dialects for GDS engagement in Nagaland.
Jamir expressed hope that such initiatives would continue to strengthen the protection, preservation, and promotion of indigenous tribal languages and cultural heritage across the state.
He expressed his sincere gratitude to the Nagaland home department, MLA Tseilhoutuo Rhutso, chief secretary Sentiyanger Imchen and director, Postal Service Kohima, Dr Alice K Vizo, for their collective support and efforts in making the policy initiative a success.
The MP also congratulated all stakeholders involved for achieving the historic recognition.
