Karnataka CM News Live Updates: Protests erupt across Karnataka after Siddaramaiah resigns as CM

Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah resigned on Thursday following months of speculation over a leadership change, clearing the path for his deputy, DK Shivakumar, to take over the state’s top post. Prabhu Shankar, special secretary to the governor, confirmed receipt of the resignation, though formal acceptance is pending as Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot is currently in Madhya Pradesh.

The resignation came shortly after Siddaramaiah reportedly informed cabinet colleagues during a breakfast meeting at his residence. The Karnataka Congress later shared photographs highlighting the cordial relationship between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar, captioned: “Unity is our strength!” In several images, Shivakumar was seen seeking Siddaramaiah’s blessings.

Earlier, Congress leaders gathered at Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s residence in Bengaluru for a crucial breakfast meeting. Congress MLA Basavaraj Rayareddy also indicated that party leaders would abide by whatever decision the high command takes, saying, “Whatever the party decides, we will follow it.”

The transition follows marathon meetings involving Rahul Gandhi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, KC Venugopal, Randeep Surjewala, Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar. According to party insiders, Rahul Gandhi urged Siddaramaiah to facilitate a smooth leadership change and consider a larger national role within the Congress organisation. Siddaramaiah reportedly agreed after consultations with loyalists, though he remains reluctant about shifting to Delhi politics despite being offered a Rajya Sabha berth.

The possible elevation of Shivakumar is being viewed as the culmination of a power-sharing understanding reportedly reached after the Congress’s 2023 Karnataka assembly election victory. Shivakumar’s supporters have consistently argued that he was promised the chief minister’s post after two-and-a-half years. While the Congress never officially confirmed such an arrangement, the leadership tussle between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar has remained one of the defining undercurrents of Karnataka politics over the past three years.

Congress leader Randeep Surjewala posted, “United We Stand … For Karnataka, For People, For Congress.”

In a message on X, Siddaramaiah clarified that he was resigning only as chief minister, not from public life. BJP takes dig at Cong over Siddaramaiah's resignation, says new CM won't benefit K'taka
The BJP in Karnataka on Thursday criticised the Congress party following reports of Siddaramaiah’s resignation as Chief Minister, claiming that any change in leadership would bring no real benefit to either Kannadigas or the state. The party alleged that the Congress government had spent the past three years hindering Karnataka’s development through corruption, misuse of public funds and poor governance.

In a post on X, the BJP said the Congress administration’s tenure had been marked by financial mismanagement, rising debt and the betrayal of young people and farmers. It also accused the government of engaging in “collection, corruption and commission politics” while neglecting the welfare of ordinary citizens.

The BJP further claimed that the Congress leadership aimed to turn Karnataka into an “ATM” for the party high command. It alleged that senior Congress leaders K C Venugopal and Randeep Singh Surjewala had effectively acted as the state’s “super Chief Ministers” during the past three years.

Protests erupt across Karnataka after Siddaramaiah resigns as CM
Supporters of Congress leader Siddaramaiah staged widespread protests across Karnataka on Thursday after his decision to resign as Chief Minister, triggering emotional scenes and political tension.

Outside his official residence, Kaveri, in Bengaluru, large crowds gathered, surrounding him and urging him not to step down. Siddaramaiah was seen attempting to calm supporters as emotions escalated, with some even trying to block his vehicle as he left to submit his resignation.

Protests spread to cities including Shivamogga, Yadgir, Kalaburagi and Hubballi, where demonstrators—many from the Kuruba and AHINDA communities—burnt tyres, raised slogans and demanded that his resignation be rejected. In Yadgir, police struggled to disperse crowds as protesters formed human chains and blocked roads. One supporter, identified as Bheemu, allegedly attempted self-harm in distress, but was stopped by others.

At multiple locations, demonstrators carried posters of Congress leaders and accused the party high command of treating Siddaramaiah unfairly. In Hubballi, slogans were also raised against senior leaders including Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge and DK Shivakumar.

Despite the unrest, Siddaramaiah confirmed he had resigned two days after being directed by the Congress leadership, thanking party leaders for giving him the opportunity to serve a second term.

From 'Janata Parivar' loyalist to Congress stalwart, Karnataka's longest-serving CM — Siddaramaiah's journey
Siddaramaiah’s political journey represents one of the most striking transformations in Karnataka politics. Once firmly rooted in the ‘Janata Parivar’ and known for his strong anti-Congress position, he eventually made a decisive shift, joining the Congress in 2006 and rising to become one of its most influential leaders in Karnataka.

Born in 1948 in Siddaramanahundi in Mysuru district, he came from a modest farming background, studied at Mysore University, and briefly practised law before entering politics. Influenced by socialist ideals of Ram Manohar Lohia, he began his career as a taluk board member and was first elected to the Assembly in 1983 from Chamundeshwari.

Over time, he emerged as a prominent backward classes leader through the AHINDA movement and steadily built his political base. After serving as Deputy Chief Minister in the early coalition era, he became Chief Minister in 2013 and again in 2023, eventually becoming the longest-serving CM in the state’s history.

Despite internal party dynamics and a long power tussle with DK Shivakumar, he completed a landmark tenure shaped by welfare schemes, though also shadowed by controversy, before stepping down as part of a leadership transition.

They said that there will be no money for development work, and the treasury will be empty. After the guarantee was implemented, we are number 1 in the entire country in terms of income. We are second in GST collection. Maharashtra is number 1, Karnataka is number 2,".

Everyone is fighting solely for their own personal gain vying for spoils, power, and position,' says BJP leader
"It is a misfortune for Karnataka that this situation has arisen due to the imprudence of the Congress party's national leadership. They should have made a decision regarding this a year ago...The MLAs lack the necessary funds to carry out their work. Ministers are unsure how long they will remain in their posts, and the administrative officers are in a state of confusion. It would be good if a decision were finally taken now; it really doesn't matter who ultimately takes the helm. However, true to the culture long prevailing within the Congress party in Karnataka, everyone is fighting solely for their own personal gain vying for spoils, power, and position. No one seems to have any genuine interest in the development of Karnataka...This situation is truly unfortunate and regrettable for Karnataka," said BJP MP Lehar Singh Siroya on on Karnataka CM tussle.

The development comes amid intense speculation over a leadership transition in the Congress government, with deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar widely seen as the frontrunner to succeed Siddaramaiah.

Senior Congress leaders and ministers had gathered at the chief minister’s official residence ‘Kaveri’ earlier in the day as discussions over the state’s political future gained momentum.

After months of political uncertainty and intense behind-the-scenes negotiations within the Congress, Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah resigned on Thursday, signalling a major leadership transition in the state and paving the way for his deputy, DK Shivakumar, to assume the top post.

The leadership transition gained momentum after Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar met Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, KC Venugopal and Karnataka in-charge Randeep Surjewala in the national capital. Sources said Rahul Gandhi urged Siddaramaiah to step aside and consider taking up a larger national role within the Congress.

The Congress leadership is simultaneously trying to avoid a “Rajasthan-like crisis” by managing the transition carefully and preventing factional unrest. While Shivakumar’s supporters are demanding that the reported power-sharing agreement be honoured, Siddaramaiah loyalists continue to highlight his support among MLAs and his political significance as a prominent OBC leader. The Congress has reportedly offered Siddaramaiah a Rajya Sabha berth and a national role to ensure a smoother transition.

The unfolding leadership change has also intensified attacks from the BJP, with opposition leaders accusing the Congress government of administrative paralysis due to the prolonged “chair fight” between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar. The coming days are expected to determine whether the Congress can manage the transition peacefully or whether internal tensions will escalate further.
