NZ vs BAN Highlights, World Cup 2023: Mitchell, Williamson guide New Zealand to third straight win

Kane Williamson made 78 on his long-awaited return to lead New Zealand to an eight-wicket victory over Bangladesh at the World Cup on Friday but was forced to retire hurt with a hand injury.

The 33-year-old had been sidelined since suffering a serious knee injury at the IPL and missed New Zealand's two opening victories at the World Cup.

Chasing 246 to win, Williamson took a painful blow to his hand when the ball was thrown in from the field as he attempted a run.

Daryl Mitchell top-scored for the Kiwis with an unbeaten 89 while Mushfiqur Rahim made 66 for Bangladesh who have lost two of their three games.

New Zealand won the toss and elected to bowl against Bangladesh in their third World Cup match on Friday.

Kane Williamson is back to lead the Kiwis after missing the opening two matches to regain match fitness following his recovery from a knee injury that he suffered during IPL 2023. He happens to be the only change for New Zealand, replacing Will Young.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh also made a change, bringing in Mahmudullah for Mahedi Hasan.

New Zealand won both their matches to sit in the second position in the points table, while Bangladesh won one and lost one in their opening two games of the ODI showpiece.

Nice to have 4 points on the board, lot of cricket to be played. Boys have prepared well and a huge challenge for us this afternoon. World Cup always brings a lot of excitement to the team, different conditions today, big challenge. We have been lucky with the bat so far, guys at the top are doing a great job and they understand these conditions very well.

Was a bit confused (about what to do), but we don't mind batting first. We didn't start well with bat and ball in the last 2 games and these are the two areas we are looking to improve. One change. Mahmudullah comes in for Mahedi.

Shakib Al Hasan, Bangladesh captain

We will bowl first, think its a good surface. Nice to take part in those warm-up games and nice to be standing here. I am coming for Will Young.

We couldn't have asked for a better start with two wins and four points. The guys are excited to get out there and put up a good show against Bangladesh. Bangladesh are a strong group, we're fortunate to have played a fair few ODI games against them recently. We've got good information on the group and how they go about things. They are crafty with the ball, they've got some good spinners and some good seamers up front as well.

NZ vs BAN Live Score: New Zealand have 'good information' on Bangladesh, says Conway
New Zealand know all about the threat posed by Bangladesh after playing the Asian side in the build-up to the Cricket World Cup, opener Devon Conway said ahead of the sides' meeting in Chennai later on Friday.

New Zealand took on Bangladesh last month as part of their preparations for the 50-overs showpiece in India, beating them 2-0 in a One-Day International series and chalking up sizeable margins of victory in both matches.

The Black Caps have brought that form into the World Cup, thrashing defending champions England by nine wickets in the opener before beating the Netherlands by 99 runs to sit second in the table.

A high-flying New Zealand will firmly bank on their potent batting line-up to ward off Bangladesh's capable spin attack on a slow Chepauk pitch and consolidate their position on top of the table during their World Cup match.

The Tigers will pin their hopes on those three to weave their magic on New Zealand to notch up a crucial victory. However, New Zealand also will feel quietly confident about their chances because of the presence of Mitchell Santner.

NZ vs BAN Live Score:
Williamson and Southee had missed the Kiwis' matches against England and Netherlands. Tom Latham stood in for Williamson as New Zealand captain in those games.
11:42 (IST) Oct 13
NZ vs BAN: However, the Kiwis will have a selection dilemma. Rachin Ravindra, who batted at No. 3 in the absence of Williamson, has notched up a hundred and fifty in two World Cup outings, and the Kiwis will have to think hard as to who to be benched to accommodate the returning 33-year-old. Despite a walloping at the hands of England in their last match, this could be Bangladesh's secret point of joy going against the Kiwis. Their spin trio of captain Shakib Al Hasan, Mahedi Hasan and Mehidy Hasan Miraz has taken 11 wickets from two matches.
11:42 (IST) Oct 13
NZ vs BAN:
The Kiwis (NRR: +1.958) have four points now, same as India (NRR: +1.5) and Pakistan (NRR: +0.92) but a better Net Run Rate has kept them ahead, and a win here will free them from the chasing pack for the time being.
