Sri Lankan held for voting in election
Trichy: A Sri Lankan resident was arrested at Trichy airport on Friday on charges of casting a vote in the recently concluded Tamil Nadu assembly elections.
Natarajah, 66, a Sri Lankan national from KK Nagar in Trichy, arrived at Trichy Airport from Colombo around 4.15pm on Friday. During the immigration check, officials found that Natarajah was holding Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) status and he had cast his vote in the recently concluded elections in the Trichy East assembly constituency. He then travelled to Sri Lanka.
On Friday, KK Nagar police arrested Natarajah based on a complaint from immigration officials and registered a case under Section 31 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 for illegal voting. They also invoked sections 318(2) and 337 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for cheating and forgery of official documents.
