LU revises LLB evaluation sys, raises internal assessment weightage

Lucknow: Students of LLB 3-year and 5-year programmes will now have to work hard all year round instead of just studying before the examination.

In compliance with new rules of Bar Council of India (BCI) and norms recommended in the National Education Policy (NEP), Lucknow University has decided to revise the evaluation pattern.

According to new norms, the performance of students will be assessed in a 75:25 ratio. This means 75% weightage will be given to the written theory examination and 25% for internal assessment based on assignments, projects and attendance, among other things. Earlier, this ratio was 90:10.

The criteria to pass the examination also has been revised. Under the new rule, students will no longer need to pass separately in theory and internal assessments. Instead, a student will be declared pass in a subject if she/he secures at least 40% marks combining theory and internal assessment. However, a student has to obtain at least 45% marks overall in all the subjects taken together in a semester to qualify for the next class.

It also has been decided that no student will be failed in semester 1 of the LLB 3-year and 5-year course.

LU spokesperson Mukul Srivastava said the reforms aim to reduce academic stress. These decisions will also be implemented in all the law courses run by colleges affiliated with the university.
