Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah has sparked a political controversy after stating in Parliament that territorial encroachment between Nepal and India had occurred on both sides of the border. Addressing Parliament for the first time since assuming office, Shah said border disputes were not limited to claims of Indian encroachment on Nepali land and suggested that Nepal had also occupied Indian territory in some areas. His remarks triggered uproar in Parliament, with opposition parties demanding that he either provide evidence or withdraw the statement. Amid the backlash, Nepal’s Foreign Ministry clarified that Shah was referring to cross-border occupation and disputes in no-man’s-land areas rather than any formal territorial takeover. The ministry said joint Nepal-India technical teams were already addressing boundary issues. Former diplomats and experts also disputed the claim, stating there is no official record of Nepal occupying Indian territory and that unresolved disputes mainly concern Lipulekh, Limpiyadhura and Kalapani.
