Kolkata: A third-year MBBS student of Calcutta Medical College and Hospital drowned in the Hooghly during while bathing at Golabari Ghat in north Kolkata early on Saturday morning.
The deceased, identified as Soham Basak, 23, a resident of Pranab Nagar in Kanaipur under Uttarpara PS in Hooghly, was swept away and rescued from during a search operation. He was declared dead on arrival at the same medical college where he studied.
According to police, information was received around 4.45 am that a person had drowned in the river while bathing. Officers rushed to the spot and met Akash Ray, 23, a fellow MBBS student and friend of the deceased.
Ray told police that he and Basak, both students of the same college, had come to the ghat around 4 am. After spending some time there, they decided to take a bath in the river. Ray said he made every effort to save his friend but was unsuccessful.
