US-Israel-Iran War News Highlights: Israel strikes Lebanese army patrol; Qatar, Saudi Arabia condemns attack

US President Donald Trump on Thursday made a series of strong remarks about Iran, claiming that the country's military capabilities had been severely degraded.

Speaking to reporters, Trump said Iran no longer had an effective navy or air force and asserted that its leadership structure had been “wiped out.”He also criticised media coverage of the conflict, accusing what he called the “fake news” of portraying Iran as performing well despite the damage it had suffered.

The comments come amid continued tensions between the United States and Iran following recent confrontations in the region.

Tensions across the Middle East escalated after the United States and Israel carried out broad strikes on Iran on February 28, an operation that targeted senior Iranian leadership. Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was reported killed in the attack, according to US and Israeli accounts.

Iran responded with missile and drone strikes against Israel and against targets linked to US allies in the Gulf, widening the regional confrontation. The retaliation included attacks aimed at US bases and regional partners, deepening fears of a broader conflict across the Middle East.

Palestinian authority condemns Iranian missile attacks on Bahrain and Kuwait
The Palestinian foreign ministry has strongly condemned Iran’s recent missile attacks on Bahrain and Kuwait, describing them as a threat to regional security and stability and a violation of international law.

In a statement, the ministry said the attacks represented “an escalation in threatening security and stability in the Arabian Gulf region, and a direct assault on their security and safety”. It further accused Iran of committing a “blatant breach of the provisions of the United Nations Charter, international law, and international norms”.

The ministry also expressed Palestine’s “full solidarity” with Bahrain and Kuwait, reaffirming its support for “all legitimate measures they take to protect their sovereignty, security, and stability”. The statement comes after Bahraini and US authorities reported intercepting missiles and drones launched toward the Gulf region amid escalating tensions involving Iran.

Pope Leo says US-Israel war on Iran fails to meet criteria for a ‘just war’
Pope Leo has reiterated that the US-Israel war on Iran does not meet the standards of a “just war” under Catholic teaching, arguing that modern warfare's destructive capabilities have rendered traditional justifications increasingly untenable.

Speaking during a visit to Madrid, the head of the Catholic Church said, “In Iran, the criteria for a just war are not present.” He added that the concept of a just war was developed centuries ago, when it was impossible to imagine the scale of destruction that contemporary weapons can inflict.

“The theory of the just war dates back to centuries when it was impossible to imagine the weapons and the destructive capacity available to humanity today,” the pontiff said in response to a reporter’s question.

Pope Leo’s remarks come after an earlier public disagreement with US vice president JD Vance, who had defended the conflict as a “just war”. The Pope has repeatedly rejected that characterisation, underscoring the Vatican’s concerns over the humanitarian consequences of the ongoing conflict.

Hezbollah claims 22 attacks on Israeli forces in southern Lebanon over 24 hours
Hezbollah said it carried out 22 attacks against Israeli forces in southern Lebanon over the past 24 hours, targeting troops, tanks and military positions as fighting between the two sides continued to intensify.

In an end-of-day statement, the Lebanese armed group said it used attack drones, rocket barrages and artillery fire to strike Israeli soldiers at multiple locations. Hezbollah claimed it targeted Israeli forces in the border areas of Odaisseh and Wadi Hunin several times overnight, before launching further attacks during the day on Israeli patrols in al-Qantara, Bint Jbeil and Rashaf, as well as at Beaufort Castle in Nabatieh governorate, a strategic site that Israeli forces reportedly seized earlier this week.

The group also said it deployed an Ababil drone against Israeli soldiers near the Khiam detention centre, claiming to have inflicted casualties. “This is the least that can be done to deter [Israel] and prevent it from continuing its dangerous objectives against Lebanon, its people, and its resistance,” Hezbollah said in its statement. The claims could not be independently verified.

The ministry said it completely rejected attacks on the Lebanese Armed Forces and any actions that undermine Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The statement comes amid growing regional criticism following an Israeli attack on a Lebanese army patrol that reportedly killed two officers and a soldier.

Iran’s World Cup team to enter and leave US on match days under visa restrictions
Iran’s national football team will be required to enter and leave the United States on the same day as its World Cup matches due to visa restrictions imposed amid tensions between Tehran and Washington, according to Iran’s ambassador to Mexico.

Speaking to reporters, Ambassador Abolfazl Pasandideh said Iranian players would not be allowed to stay in the US between fixtures. “We can enter in the morning and we must leave the same day,” he said, explaining the conditions communicated to the team.

As a result, Iran’s World Cup squad is now based in Mexico instead of its originally planned training camp in Tucson, Arizona. The team is scheduled to play three group-stage matches in the United States, including games in Los Angeles and Seattle. The restrictions come against the backdrop of heightened hostilities between Iran and Israel and broader tensions involving the United States.

Qatar condemns Israeli strike on Lebanese army patrol, calls it violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty
Qatar has strongly condemned Israel’s attack on a Lebanese army patrol that killed two officers and a soldier, describing it as a dangerous escalation and a blatant violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty.

In a statement, Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the strike represented a serious breach of international law and urged the international community to compel “the Israeli occupation authorities” to halt their repeated attacks on Lebanon. The ministry also called for full implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, which was adopted to end hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah following the 2006 war.

Reaffirming Doha’s support for Lebanon, the ministry stressed its backing for the country’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as all efforts aimed at strengthening its stability and prosperity. Iran war news: US has more oil, gas, coal than any other country, says Trump
US President Donald Trump said that they have more energy resources than any other country, given that Venezuela is working out well. Trump, in his gaggle with press on Air Force One en route Chippewa Falls, said that the US is having great success with Iran.

"I can do a lot of things. We have a lot of alternatives. But the beautiful thing from our standpoint is we have more oil and gas and coal and everything else than any other country on the planet. And then when you add Venezuela to it... we have probably 64 percent of that type of energy. That's unbelievable. Venezuela's working out very well. We're getting along incredibly. The country is happy. The people love the USA. The big oil companies are moving in there now as we speak. And we're going to be taking out millions of barrels of oil," Trump said when he was asked if he would limit exports of gasoline.

He was then asked if US oil majors doing enough to boost output, and he said that they have everything they need.

"Well we have everything we need. The world doesn't. But I will say people thought it was going to be a lot worse. You know, today I looked at 96 dollars a barrel. People thought that was going to be 300 dollars a barrel. And in the meantime, we're having great success with Iran. They're not going to have a nuclear weapon. And they're in no position to have a nuclear weapon," he said.

He was also asked how much oil has the US gotten through the Strait with the help of naval escorts and if Trump directed US forces to guide those ships through the Strait.

Trump responded, "A lot. I don't want to say how many, but a lot. A lot of oil is coming into our country and a lot of oil is coming into the world that people don't even know about. And that's why it's at 97 dollars a barrel instead of 300 dollars a barrel. And when that whole thing is straightened out, shouldn't take long, one way or the other it's going to get done. And when it's all straightened out, you're going to have oil prices drop down to maybe even lower than they were. I was... and you've heard me say this. I was in Iowa and for a gallon of gasoline it was at 1.85. So that was three and a half months ago."

Meanwhile, US forces shot down Iranian missiles and drones launched toward the Strait of Hormuz and neighboring countries, the latest conflict in the region that could further complicate efforts to end the war between the United States and Iran, Washington Post reported earlier in the day.

The report quoted the US military, saying that "Iran fired seven ballistic missiles toward Kuwait and Bahrain hours after U.S. Central Command (Centcom) shot down four Iranian one-way attack drones that were launched toward the Strait of Hormuz."

"Once again, Iranian officials insist on addressing the Lebanese with a guardian and ruler mindset, as if Lebanon were a province subordinate to Tehran rather than an independent state with sovereignty and free decision-making," Mahfoud said on X.

He called for severing ties "with any state that opposes Lebanon or treats it with superiority and disdain or violates its right to be a free and independent sovereign."

He claimed Reuters and The Guardian had acknowledged that Trump needed a temporary agreement to reopen Hormuz, calling it "a victory for the resistance."

Velayati warned regional states against what he described as the "illusion of appeasement," saying the emerging balance of power would not be built on weakening Iran-backed groups.

"Diplomatic wishful thinking carries a heavy price – lasting peace grows from a balance of power, not from hollow, unbacked commitments," he wrote.

Pentagon raises Israel spying threat level to 'critical' amid tensions over Iran war: Report
The Pentagon's Defense Intelligence Agency has raised its counterintelligence threat assessment for Israel to "critical" amid escalating tensions between Washington and Israel over the conflict with Iran, US media reports said.

Citing two current US officials and one former official, the report states that the DIA posted an internal message detailing the change, which was viewed by one of the current officials.

The designation stems from growing concerns within the Pentagon that Israel was making a targeted effort to surveil top US officials. According to the sources, this surveillance was aimed at gathering intelligence on the Trump administration's internal deliberations and decision-making regarding Middle East conflicts.

The DIA assessment included a seven-page document and featured a specific chart, one of the current US officials said. The document noted that Israel's capabilities to conduct both human espionage and technical information collection had reached a "critical level."

The official added that the document also identified a series of specific incidents that heightened US concerns.

"The US already takes extra precautions when visiting Israel," one of the current US officials was quoted as saying. "They're well-known to aggressively collect," the official said of Israel.

US military says it shot down Iranian drones launched toward Strait of Hormuz
The US military said it shot down four Iranian drones that were launched toward the Strait of Hormuz on Friday and then struck some of the Islamic Republic’s coastal surveillance radar sites in response, raising the risk to a shaky ceasefire as the Trump administration ramps up pressure on Iran.

The military is enforcing a blockade on Iranian ports in response to Tehran’s chokehold on the crucial corridor for global oil and natural gas shipments, which has sent energy prices spiking and posed political problems for President Donald Trump's Republican Party ahead of the midterm congressional elections.

US Central Command said it hit the radar sites, including an island in the strait, “to defend against further attacks.”

The team's participation in the World Cup has been complicated by Iran's war with Israel and the United States. Problems with processing visas had earlier led Iran to move its training base from Tucson, Arizona, to Tijuana, on Mexico’s border with California.

One US official said all players on the Iranian team were approved for visas and were in the process of receiving them. A second official said visas had been issued for players, coaches, trainers and some support staff. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the visas publicly.

The second official could not say if any Iranian applicants had been denied. It was not immediately clear when the Iranian team’s passports would be returned to them to allow them to travel, but the official said it could be as early as Friday or Saturday.

The squad has been preparing for the World Cup at a training camp in Antalya, Turkey, before departing for Tijuana. The team said it has already received visas from Mexico’s embassy in Ankara.

UN food agency says millions are being pushed into hunger by Iran war
The UN food agency said millions of people are being pushed into acute hunger by the Iran war, as it warned would happen if the conflict escalated and oil prices remained high.

The World Food Program said an analysis in three vulnerable countries found that an additional 2.5 million people in Somalia, 2.3 million in Afghanistan and 1.3 million in Sri Lanka are struggling to meet their basic food needs.

In March, WFP predicted that 45 million people could be pushed into food insecurity by the end of June. That would be on top of the 318 million people around the world who are already food insecure.

“We remain by that prognosis,” WFP’s acting Executive Director Carl Skau told U.N. reporters. “That’s mainly because the correlation between the prices of energy and food is so tight in many places, and also that in the poorest countries people are already spending all their money on food, and hence when food prices rise, they eat less.”
