Shimla: Governor Kavinder Gupta on Thursday flagged off a mini marathon from the historic Ridge Ground in Shimla on the occasion of
World Environment Day, emphasising the need for collective efforts to ensure a clean environment and a drug-free Himachal Pradesh.
The event was jointly organised by the state police, the department of environment, science, technology and climate change, and the census directorate. Held under the theme ‘Clean Environment and Drug-Free Life', the marathon attracted participation from across the state and neighbouring regions. Students, senior citizens, specially abled individuals and members of the Central Armed Police Forces took part in large numbers.
Addressing the gathering, the governor said Himachal Pradesh is blessed with a clean environment and fresh air, which are vital for public health. He stressed the importance of preserving the state's natural beauty for future generations and ensuring that development does not come at the expense of environmental sustainability.
Expressing concern over the growing menace of drug abuse, Gupta lauded the state for its awareness campaigns and said protecting youth from substance abuse requires collective social responsibility. The governor also highlighted the importance of cleanliness and public participation in social campaigns. Earlier, he administered a pledge promoting cleanliness, environmental conservation and a drug-free lifestyle, besides visiting an environmental awareness exhibition and signing the ‘Harit Himachal and Chitta-Mukt Himachal' campaign wall.
