PlàInviting Old Town restaurant with a Mediterranean twist

Word to the wise: For a more casual tapas bite, drop into PlĂ 's sister establishment, Bar del PlĂ , on nearby Montcada Street.

This romantic, long-running restaurant is nestled in an inauspicious-looking side street in the city's Gothic quarter, which means its atmosphere is quite different to those places on tourist thoroughfares. You may even find yourself in the company of some genuine locals.

Chef Sergio Sánchez-Montijano creates dishes best described as 'creative Mediterranean', but there's nothing here that'll scare the horses: rather, think classics with a twist, such as beef fillet with grilled fois gras. The two-floored interior is charmingly bohemian, with mismatched furniture, artwork on the walls and candles on the tables, and service is warm and chummy: waiters pull up a chair to take your order.
