PAK vs SL Highlights, T20 World Cup 2026: Pakistan knocked out of T20 World Cup despite win over Sri Lanka

Pakistan vs Sri Lanka Live Score: Pakistan were eliminated from the T20 World Cup on Saturday despite a five-run win over Sri Lanka in their Super Eights match, as New Zealand progressed to the semifinals on the basis of a superior net run rate.

Pakistan needed to hold Sri Lanka to 147 or fewer to move ahead of New Zealand in Group 2. Although they posted 212 for 8 after being sent in to bat, Sri Lanka finished on 207 for 6, which was enough to keep Pakistan behind on net run rate. Both teams ended the Super Eights stage with three points each, but New Zealand advanced as the second-placed side from the group.

Pakistan had reduced Sri Lanka to 101 for 5 in the 12th over, putting themselves in a strong position. However, Pavan Rathnayake and captain Dasun Shanaka added runs quickly to take Sri Lanka to 148 in the 16th over, effectively ending Pakistan’s qualification hopes.

At one stage, Pakistan were also in danger of failing to defend their highest T20 World Cup total of 212. In the final over bowled by Shaheen Shah Afridi, Shanaka struck 4-6-6-6 off the first four balls. Sri Lanka then needed six runs from the last two deliveries.

Shanaka missed while attempting a scoop on the fifth ball and left the final delivery, a yorker, expecting it to be called wide. It was not. Pakistan secured a five-run win but still fell short of a semifinal spot, finishing one point behind New Zealand.

Dushmantha Chameera to Fakhar Zaman, OUT! PLAYED ON! Sri Lanka finally, finally have a wicket. But the damage is done. Chameera bowls a low full toss and far outside off,  Fakhar shuffles to whip it across to the leg side, but gets beaten by the pace and inside edges it back onto the stumps behind. Farhan pats Fakhar's back as the latter makes his way back to the dugout after an enterprising knock for his country. A whirlwind inning from Fakhar Zaman comes to an end and Pakistan are 176/1.

Dushmantha Chameera to Sahibzada Farhan, DROPPED AND SIX! Speechless stuff from Sri Lanka. From around the wicket, a good-length delivery, wide outside off. Farhan goes through the line and lofts it towards the wide long off region. Liyanage moves a bit to his left, settles under it near the boundary but steps onto the cushions while completing the catch. Unable to release the ball in time, it results in six runs. The replay confirms the same.

Dasun Shanaka to Sahibzada Farhan, DROPPED AGAIN! Dasun Shanaka is shellshocked and so are the Sri Lankan fans. Short of a good length, outside off, Sahibzada Farhan waits for the pace off ball to arrive, swats it aerially, but from the toe end of the blade. It goes only as far as long on where Dunith Wellalage dives low to his left to catch, but puts it down. Two taken. Looks like Wellalage has hurt himself while attempting the catch. But that pretty much sums up the evening for Sri Lanka so far.

DRINKS! With 6 overs left in the innings, Pakistan are already 150/0. But, how much will they be comfortable defending? As any total they get, they will have to shave 65 runs off it. One feels that it has to be at least 220 or more. Sri Lanka have been a shadow of the side from the previous stage of the competition and all they can do now is damage control. Let's see if there's any late momentum shift in the first innings or not. Also, Dasun Shanaka (2-0-24-0) is back into the attack.

Halfway reached. A fantastic batting exhibition by Farhan and Fakhar so far. They have timed the ball to perfection, ran well between the wickets and have kept the scorecard ticking at a consistent rate. Absolutely contrasting with Sri Lanka. They have been sloppy in the ground fielding and have bowled a bit too many bad balls to be put away. They still crave for their first breakthrough and Maheesh Theekshana (2-0-19-0) is back on, replacing Dasun Shanaka.
