BAN vs AUS Highloghts, 1st ODI: Bangladesh win by 86 runs (DLS method)

angladesh beat a depleted Australia for only the second time in one-day international cricket on Tuesday.
Mosaddek Hossain returned to ODIs after four years with a chancy half-century and Nahid Rana rattled Australia with his pace in an emphatic 86-run victory on the DLS Method.

Mosaddek profited from three dropped catches to score an unbeaten 86 off 70 balls. Najmul Hossain Shanto (67) and opening batter Tanzid Hasan (54) also contributede to Bangladesh’s strong total of 284-8.

Rana took 4-41, often hitting 140 kph, as Australia limped to 191-9 in 42.2 overs, needing an unlikely 94 runs off 46 balls when lightning and rain stopped play. The game never restarted with Cameron Green on a team-best unbeaten 52 off 66 balls.

Australia lost to Pakistan 2-1 in ODIs last week and its playing its first bilateral ODIs with Bangladesh in 15 years. Bangladesh's only previous win over the six-time world champion was in 2005. Mirpur is scheduled to also host the remaining two ODIs on Thursday and Sunday.

That brings this to a close - That's it from this entertaining contest, with Bangladesh clinching a memorable win over Australia. The hosts will now look to seal the series in the next game, while the Aussies will be eager to bounce back and force a decider. We will be back at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka for the 2nd ODI on 11th June, Thursday at 5 am GMT. As always, you can join us early for all the build-up to the game. Until then, cheers and goodbye!

19:54 (IST) Jun 09

The victorious skipper of Bangladesh - Mehidy Hasan Miraz starts by saying the camp is delighted with how the batting unit performed. He highlights the Shanto and Tanzid partnership as a particular highlight, saying he was genuinely excited watching the two bat together. He does feel the side can do even better, though. But he is quick to credit Mosaddek and Taskin for the way they held their nerve at the back end, saying the two were completely unfazed in the pressure of the closing overs. On Mosaddek specifically, Miraz acknowledges that the comeback has not been easy after such a long absence. He details that the all-rounder responded in the best possible way, showing real character when the team needed it most. As captain, he says, moments like that fill him with genuine pride.

19:48 (IST) Jun 09

PLAYER OF THE MATCH - Mosaddek Hossain wins the award for his all-round brilliance on his return to the national team. Unbeaten 86 off 70 with the bat, 2/37 with the ball, and a fantastic catch as well. Mosaddek says that it felt like the same when he was first picked for Bangladesh all those years back. Adds that he has worked hard to get back in the team and is very happy with his performance. Mentions that the conditions were tough, but it was a 320 wicket. However, after losing two wickets, he just tried to back himself and batted the way he did in the Premier League. Hossain shares that it was a good opportunity for him with the ball, but calls his success a bit lucky and thanks the Almighty. Ends by saying that he wants to serve Bangladesh for as long as he plays professional cricket.

19:47 (IST) Jun 09

The captain of Australia - Josh Inglis admits that they weren't clinical in the field as they dropped several catches. He notes that the chances that went down allowed Bangladesh to post a total that should have been considerably lower and far more manageable to chase. On the bowling, he singles out Ellis for special praise, describing him as outstanding across all phases. He adds that Ellis used his variations smartly, adjusted his fields well and produced a high-quality spell that kept them in the hunt throughout. On the chase, Inglis reflects and details that the message to the batters was simple - to back themselves and play their natural game. He notes the surface offered decent value for batting, but early wickets put the side on the back foot. Highlights that several batters got starts, but none could push on and convert, and the absence of a substantial partnership ultimately proved the difference. Looking ahead, Inglis keeps it brief. He details that the side now has a clearer picture of what these conditions demand, and with the series still alive, he stresses the need to respond immediately.

Presentation Time...

Bangladesh strike, rain steals finish - Bangladesh carried their momentum straight into the bowling innings, with Taskin Ahmed striking on the very first ball of the chase to set the tone instantly. Mustafizur Rahman followed it up right away, keeping the pressure firmly on, and it could have been three early wickets had Tanzid Hasan held on to a chance off Cooper Connolly. After a brief lull, Nahid Rana broke the resistance to form an opening. Mosaddek Hossain, fresh off a valuable fifty, made an impact in the middle overs with a couple of crucial wickets, before Rana stole the show with a brilliant four-wicket haul, ripping through the Australian middle order. Just when Bangladesh were within touching distance of victory, Fizz struck again to leave Australia on the brink. But as the finish approached, lightning and rain forced play to be stopped. In the end, Bangladesh sealed the win via DLS, but were denied that full moment, the chance to finish on the field and celebrate this massive victory in front of their home fans.

19:40 (IST) Jun 09

Tigers roar as Mosaddek marks dream return - Earlier in the game, Bangladesh posted their fourth-highest ODI total against Australia, courtesy of half-centuries from Najmul Hossain Shanto and Tanzid Hasan. But the standout story was Mosaddek Hossain, who marked his return to international cricket after almost four years in style, smashing a superb unbeaten 86 off 70 deliveries, also his highest ODI score. For Australia, Nathan Ellis led the attack with a fine three-wicket haul, while Matt Renshaw and debutant Liam Scott chipped in with a couple of wickets each. However, Adam Zampa struggled to find his rhythm, and along with a few costly dropped chances in the field, Australia were left chasing a much bigger target than they would have liked.

19:38 (IST) Jun 09

Aussie batting unravels in Dhaka - Australia got off to a nightmare start, losing Matthew Short on the very first ball, which soon became 2/2 and instantly put them on the back foot. Cooper Connolly and Josh Inglis tried to steady things with a 49-run stand, but the momentum never really shifted. Alex Carey then offered some stability alongside Cooper, who looked to take the innings deep but failed to convert his start. Carey also fell under pressure on 47, and from there it was a rapid collapse. Australia slipped from 128/4 to 140/8 in no time, effectively throwing the game away. Cameron Green held one end with an unbeaten fifty but kept losing partners, never quite able to build a stand. And with lightning and rain bringing play to a halt, Australia were eventually handed an 86-run defeat via DLS, as the weather sealed their fate.

19:34 (IST) Jun 09

Bangladesh break the 21-year wait - The wait of 21 years is finally over! Bangladesh have sealed only their second-ever ODI win over Australia, with the first coming way back in 2005 in Cardiff, and in the process have taken a 1-0 lead in the series. What a moment in their cricketing history - one that will be remembered for years to come. And they have done it in some style too, producing a dominant all-round performance against an Australian side that, in fairness, were missing a few big names but simply could not capitalise on the moments that came their way.

19:33 (IST) Jun 09

And that is that. The plug has been pulled after a delay of more than an hour. MATCH HAS BEEN ABANDONED. The two umpires were spotted strolling along the sidelines, sharing a brief word with the ground staff before making their way back in. The result - Bangladesh beat Australia by 86 runs (DLS method). Chasing 285 on a surface like this was a tall order, but Australia's batting frailties in the subcontinent got exposed once again. The conditions asked hard questions, and the answers were not good enough from the tourists.

19:05 (IST) Jun 09

1.35 pm GMT update - Looks like the rain has picked up and the chances of a resumption are fading fast. There is no movement in the middle whatsoever, and the stands have emptied out too. FYI, this will be Bangladesh's first ODI victory over Australia since that famous day in Cardiff back in 2005. More significantly, it would be their first-ever ODI win against the Aussies on home soil. Whether it comes via DLS or a resumption remains to be seen.

18:55 (IST) Jun 09

1.25 pm GMT update - A few ground staff remain out on the field without umbrellas, which suggests the drizzle is light enough for now. But even a light drizzle can hang around, and even a gentle shower can delay things far longer than expected. It has already been a very long day in Dhaka, and with time running short, DLS could have the final say if conditions do not clear up soon.

18:52 (IST) Jun 09

Game stopped due to : Rain Stoppage

18:48 (IST) Jun 09

1.18 pm GMT update - Live visuals show that the ground staff are bringing the covers in the middle to protect the pitch. More covers are being rushed out to protect the square, as it has now started to drizzle a bit as well. The break could last a while, it seems. And in just a matter of time, the whole square is under the sheets now.

18:37 (IST) Jun 09

Game stopped due to : Bad Weather Condition

18:36 (IST) Jun 09

1.06 pm GMT update - There's some lightning around, and the umpires have decided to take the players off the field as a precautionary measure. Bangladesh are on the cusp of a win but will have to exercise some patience for the final rites.
