Importance of antioxidants


Antioxidants play a key role in boosting overall health by neutralizing harmful free radicals in the body. These powerful compounds help prevent cell damage, reduce inflammation, and slow aging. Antioxidants like vitamin C, E, and polyphenols reduce wrinkles and improve skin elasticity. Also, antioxidants are said to enhance immune response, helping the body fight infections and diseases. For the unversed, vitamin C, selenium, and zinc are key immune-boosting antioxidants.

What study says?

As per a study by the National Library of Medicine, titled The total antioxidant content of more than 3100 foods, beverages, spices, herbs and supplements used worldwide, "Berries, fruits, nuts, chocolate, vegetables and products thereof constitute common foods and beverages with high antioxidant values." The study also highlights that a plant-based diet protects against chronic oxidative stress-related diseases. Dietary plants contain variable chemical families and amounts of antioxidants. It has been hypothesized that plant antioxidants may contribute to the beneficial health effects of dietary plants.

Blueberries


These berries are considered to be one of the richest natural sources of antioxidants. They are packed with anthocyanins, the pigments that give them their deep blue color. And the other antioxidants in blueberries are vitamin C, vitamin E, and quercetin, which help neutralize free radicals. Also, it is said that the Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) score of blueberries is 4,669 per 100g, making them one of the top antioxidant-rich foods.

Dark Chocolate


Dark chocolate is also packed with powerful antioxidants. It contains 70% cocoa which is rich in flavonoids, polyphenols, and catechins. It also has a higher ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) score, which helps fight free radicals, reducing oxidative stress and inflammation.

Pecans


They are also packed with antioxidants, healthy fats, and essential nutrients that support overall well-being. They are rich in vitamin E and flavonoids, which protect brain cells from damage. And the vitamin E and zinc found in pecans help promote healthy and glowing skin.

Artichokes are also rich in antioxidants and are said to be rich in polyphenols, quercetin, and rutin, which protect cells from oxidative damage. They also contain vitamin C, luteolin, and silymarin, which have powerful antioxidants that fight inflammation.

Goji Berries


Also known as wolfberries, are one of the most antioxidant-rich superfoods and have an ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) score of 3,290, making them one of the top antioxidant foods. They are also rich in carotenoids (beta-carotene, zeaxanthin, lutein) which are essential for eye and skin health. They are also rich in vitamin C and zinc, which help fight colds and infections.

Spinach


This leafy green is also rich in antioxidants and is packed with vitamins and minerals that protect the body from oxidative stress. It is rich in Lutein and zeaxanthin that help protect eye health and contains beta-carotene, which converts into vitamin A, which is essential for vision and immunity. It also contains the antioxidant Quercetin, a powerful flavonoid that fights inflammation and infections.
