Pune: Three trucks parked in the parking area of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Main Market Yard at Gultekdi were completely gutted in a major fire that broke out around 2.30am on Thursday. No one was injured in the incident.
Upon receiving information about the fire, the fire brigade and police reached the spot. However, by the time they arrived, all three vehicles had already suffered extensive damage. Firefighters made strenuous efforts and eventually brought the blaze under control. Thankfully, the trucks had unloaded the material at the Market Yard and were empty.
Officials from Swargate police station conducted a spot panchnama and the exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined. Meanwhile, locals said that there is a temple near the parking area and that some people often dump garbage in the vicinity. They also alleged that a few individuals gather there at night to consume alcohol under the cover of darkness. It is suspected that a lit cigarette may have ignited the garbage, causing the fire to spread and engulf the trucks.
Senior inspector Yashwant Nikam of Swargate police station said, “We are investigating the incident but as of now, we do not suspect any foul play behind the fire.”
In another incident of fire, the garbage in and around the Mutha right bank canal in the Camp area caught fire on Thursday evening. Dense smoke permeated in the Camp area due to the fire. The fire brigade officials were trying to control the flames till late in the night.
