Tirunelveli: Police arrested a couple on Monday for murdering their 22-year-old daughter on Saturday for alleged extramarital affair with her brother-in-law. The couple attempted to pass it off as a suicide.
The arrested couple have been identified as
Sivan, 60, and Vairammal, 57 from Shenbagaramanallur near Moolaikaraipatti in Tirunelveli district.
The deceased, Amudha, 22, was their unmarried younger daughter. Police said that on Sunday morning, the parents informed the Moolaikaraipatti police that Amudha had died by suicide after consuming poison.
However, police grew suspicious over the death after noticing strangulation injury on her neck, and a subsequent police investigation revealed glaring inconsistencies in their statement.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the couple had been facing significant internal conflict regarding allegation of an extramarital relationship between Amudha and her brother-in-law. The situation reached a breaking point, leading the parents to kill their daughter.
The parents confessed to the crime, admitting that on Saturday, they had forced their daughter to consume poison; she didn't die despite the poisoning. So, they subsequently strangled her to ensure her death.
Following the confession, police formally arrested Sivan and Vairammal. They were produced before the magistrate and have been remanded in judicial custody.
