UP to fast-track compensation for unnatural deaths in state prisons
Lucknow: In a move aimed at protecting human rights, the Uttar Pradesh cabinet on Wednesday approved the policy to provide compensation to the dependents or next of kin of prisoners who die unnatural deaths while they are lodged in state prisons. The decision has been taken in compliance with directions issued from time to time by the Supreme Court of India, the Allahabad High Court, and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) regarding the rights and welfare of prisoners and their families. According to a govt official, under the existing system, compensation in cases of unnatural deaths of inmates lodged in Uttar Pradesh prisons was paid in accordance with NHRC recommendations. However, the process often involved procedural delays, resulting in considerable waiting periods for the deceased prisoner’s dependents to receive financial assistance. The proposed policy is intended to ensure prompt financial relief to bereaved families while also enhancing accountability, transparency and adherence to human rights standards within the prison system.
