Tribute to Assam’s 1st CM on 136th birth anniv
Guwahati: Rich tributes were paid across Assam on Saturday to Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi, the state’s first chief minister, on the occasion of his 136th birth anniversary.
The day was marked by solemn remembrance and renewed appreciation of Bardoloi’s enduring legacy as the architect of modern Assam.
Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, in his message, described Bardoloi’s “profound patriotism, towering personality and visionary political decisions” as contributions that safeguarded the Assamese people and enriched the state.
“On the birth anniversary of this great son of Assam, I offer my heartfelt respects,” he said.
CM Himanta Biswa Sarma also paid homage, calling Bardoloi “the architect of modern Assam” in a post on X.
He noted that Bardoloi’s leadership came at a defining moment in history, when his courage and vision ensured Assam’s interests were protected and the state remained an integral part of India.
The tributes extended beyond political leaders. At Guwahati airport, which bears Bardoloi’s name, employees observed the anniversary by recalling his contributions as a visionary leader whose work continues to inspire generations.
In a symbolic gesture, the airport team distributed saplings to passengers, linking Bardoloi’s legacy of nurturing Assam’s identity with the idea of nurturing the environment for future generations.
The commemorations reflect Bardoloi’s stature not only as Assam’s first chief minister but also as a national figure honoured with the Bharat Ratna. His role in steering Assam through the turbulence of Partition and safeguarding its territorial integrity remains a cornerstone of the state’s political history.
In perspective, the tributes underline how Bardoloi’s legacy continues to resonate in contemporary Assam. Leaders and institutions alike invoked his vision as a reminder of the values of courage, inclusivity, and foresight that remain relevant in today’s socio‑political landscape. The sapling distribution at the airport symbolized continuity — a gesture that connects past sacrifices with future responsibilities.
