Pilibhit: Uttar Pradesh Cow Service Commission member Rajesh Singh Sengar on Tuesday inspected several cow shelters in Pilibhit and chaired a district-level review meeting, stressing measures to make shelters financially self-reliant through the commercial use of cattle byproducts.
The commission directed shelter authorities to collaborate with the horticulture department to manufacture eco-friendly flowerpots from cow dung and increase production of organic manure, vermicompost and biogas. Officials said the initiative would help reduce dependence on chemical fertilizers.
Chief veterinary officer Dr Praveen Kumar Tyagi said Pilibhit has 66 cow shelters housing 8,190 stray cattle. With each animal producing 4-5 kg of dung daily, more than 300 quintals of dung are generated every day.
Sengar also directed officials to ensure fixed schedules for cleanliness, fodder and water distribution, improve feed quality, arrange separate facilities for sick and weak cattle, and deploy trained para-veterinary staff for timely medical care.
