Sabarmati clean up drive: 198 tonnes of waste removed in four days
Ahmedabad: Hundreds of citizens participated in the four-day ‘Swachh Sabarmati Mahaabhiyan’ organised by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Ltd (SRFDCL), helping remove 198 tonnes of waste from the Sabarmati river and its surrounding areas.
The cleanliness drive, held to mark World Environment Day, concluded on Friday with over 7,000 volunteers joining the effort and clearing 56 tonnes of waste from the river.
According to AMC officials, the campaign began on June 2, when more than 7,500 citizens took part in the clean-up operation and removed 68 tonnes of waste from the riverbed and adjoining areas. On June 3, around 2,700 volunteers collected and disposed of 34 tonnes of solid waste, including plastic materials and discarded bottles.
The drive continued on June 4 with participation from more than 3,100 citizens, who helped remove an additional 40 tonnes of waste. The final day recorded the second-highest turnout, with over 7,000 people contributing to the clean-up efforts.
The large-scale public response enabled authorities to clear nearly 200 tonnes of waste over four days, highlighting the role of citizen involvement in maintaining urban ecosystems and public spaces.
