'Are you from India?': Viral video shows random racist attack on couple in US, they don't lose calm
A video from the US has been doing the rounds, where an Indian couple was asked by a stranger, presumably in his car, if they were Indian, and then told them to go back to India. The date and the place of the video were not confirmed but several Indian-origin people, NRI channels shared the video and pointed out what Indians have to face in the US on a daily basis.
In this video, the stranger asked the Indian couple whether India is better than the US, or vice versa. The couple was graceful enough to continue the interaction and when the husband was explaining that their family is in India, the stranger asked them why they were in the US if India was so good. "To explore the world," the husband said.
"No, we don't want you here. You gotta go home," the stranger said. "Get the f*uk out of my country," the stranger abused as the Indian man did not react much.
"Heartbreaking and disturbing," an NRI channel wrote, sharing the video.
Many people commented on how the Indian couple did not lose their calm and did not engage in the hateful exchange. Many, however, called this politeness the reason why Indians get targeted.
"Why stay so silent and ignorant? This taking it easy attitude makes us even more vulnerable. Start being more hard and aggressive towards racism," one wrote.
"These kind of incidents are up in real world in North Texas. If it happens to you or anyone you know or in your vicinity - DO REPORT it to authorities. Have hate incident recorded on your side & give it to cops. Inaction emboldens bullies!!" another wrote.
"This is so stupid. What is the point of abusing random strangers? Your government issued a visa to these people. If you have a problem with them visiting/staying there take it up with the people who let them in," a user said.
Many X users tagged Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the viral video as on his India trip, Rubio said stupid people make such racist comments online. "I don't know how to address that, but I'll take that very seriously about the comments. I'm sure that there are people that have made comments online and other places." "Every country in the world has stupid people. I'm sure there are stupid people here. There are stupid people in the United States that make dumb comments all the time. I don't know what else to tell you other than the United States is a very welcoming country," Rubio said.
Riding on the wave of anti-Indian sentiment, several so-called influencers has started targeting Indians wherever they spot them. This particular video was posted by a verified social media handle (@AyTone4th) that called himself a music producer. He recently went inside an Indian restaurant and asked for 'cow poo'.
