​Early life and background

Pankaj Dheer was born on November 9, 1956, in Punjab, India, into a family connected to films. His father, C.L. Dheer, was a well-known filmmaker. Initially, Pankaj wanted to become a director, but his journey took a turn towards acting when he debuted in the 1983 film Sookha. ​Becoming Karna in Mahabharat

Pankaj Dheer’s role as Karna in B.R. Chopra’s Mahabharat made him a household name. His performance as the tragic hero won hearts nationwide. His image as Karna was even used in school textbooks. ​Memories from Mahabharat

Dheer shared his experiences from Mahabharat in an interview with Hindustan Times in 2016. He recalled staying in tents without vanity vans or separate make-up rooms. One toilet was shared by 40 people. He often wore heavy metal costumes, which were very uncomfortable. He even recalled having an accident when his chariot broke down during a scene. After Mahabharat, Pankaj Dheer acted in many popular TV shows like Chandrakanta, The Great Maratha, Kanoon, Harischandra, Badho Bahu, and Sasural Simar Ka. He also appeared in films like Sadak (1991), Sanam Bewafa (1991), Soldier (1998), Baadshah (1999), and Taarzan – The Wonder Car (2004). ​Pankaj Dheer on refusing to cut his moustache upon B.R Chopra’s order

In an old interview with Lehren Retro, Pankaj talked about being asked by B.R. Chopra to shave his moustache to play Brihannala (Arjuna’s eunuch form). He refused, which upset Chopra. Pankaj said, “Chopra sahab told me, ‘Get out of this door and don’t come back.’ He tore my contract, and for six months I kept roaming and doing dubbing.” Later, fate brought him back to play Karna, which became his most iconic role. ​Nikitin Dheer on Pankaj Dheer praising him for playing Ravan

Nikitin Dheer who is the son of the late actor described playing Ravan as a destined opportunity. He even recalled that his father watched every episode of Ramayan and even called the director Siddharth to discuss aspects of the show. Nikitin shared, “That is the greatest victory because my father is my biggest critic.” He recalled a touching moment: “Unhone mujhe ek baat nahi, ki you performed the role of Ravan even better than me.
