Located in the middle of Danube in central Budapest, Margaret Island is a well-known recreational area. The island was a seat of Dominican Convent and Franciscan church around 12th century. Ruins of these medieval monuments can be seen all over the island. Today the island contains landscaped gardens, water parks and outdoor swimming pools. It is a popular recreational hub for locals as well as tourists. The outdoor theatre is known for hosting concerts, plays and operas during summers. This 2.5 km long island can be best explored by foot or on a bicycle. There are no vehicles allowed and it is a great place to escape the hustle bustle of the city. Lush green lawns are a perfect place to relax after long day of wandering around historical monuments in Budapest. It is also a fun place for kids with lot of activities. Margaret Island is a favourite place of locals for picnics. Avoid visiting the island during the weekends as it tends to get really crowded during the summer time!
