Keeping an eye on the sun for centuries
Word to the wise: Jantar Mantar is often the site of protests - exercise caution if crowds are gathered.

This huge 18th century observatory lies in the heart of New Delhi and allows a fascinating glimpse into the advancement of science in India. One of five sites built by Maharaja Jain Singh II in order to monitor the movement of the sun and other celestial bodies, the complex consists of 13 architectural astronomy instruments flanked by trees and grass.
Perhaps the most intriguing structure is the Ram Yantra, which looks like a miniature model of a Roman ampitheatre. Climbing to the top of the Samrat Yantra - a 70 foot high giant triangle that worked as an equal hour sundial - provides an excellent view.

A great escape from the din of the city; once you've explored the instruments make time to lounge on the grass at the furthest corner of the complex and relish the peace and quiet.
