Humayun’s Tomb
Delhi’s most glorious Mughal spectacle
Noteworthy for: The tomb houses the grave of Humayun, the father of third Mughal Emperor Akbar, and was the model for the Taj Mahal.

One of Delhi's three UNESCO-listed sites, Humayun's Tomb is a Persian-style sandstone masterpiece built in 1570.
If this impressive structure reminds you of the Taj Mahal, that's probably because not only does it have many similar features - the bulbous dome, the high arches - but it is also widely believed that it was a prototype for the Taj, which was built later between 1632-1653.

Several other tombs are scattered among the extensive formal gardens; a walk through them is best completed just before sunset when the crowds will have thinned out a little.
