Home to Kolkata’s largest mosque—Nakhoda Masjid—Zakaria Street buzzes with activity all through the month of Ramzan, when it gets inundated with stalls selling everything from colourful bangles and clothes during the day, to the most delicious Ramzan fare after sunset. Whether you’ve fasted through the day or not, a must-try here is the special haleem (meat stew) dished out at Aminia Hotel only during this month. Slow-cooked over a low flame along with lentils and dollops of cream, this dish is definitely a must-eat, although you need to get there as early as possible because they sell out very soon. If you have any space left after, try the mutton chaap and the biryani served at Royal India Hotel, and wind up with something sweet—try the dates or the sevaiyan (sweet vermicelli) sold at stalls on every corner—before you collapse into a food coma.
