When it comes to food, Osaka is synonymous with takoyaki, a fried/grilled dish prepared with diced octopus, tempura and green onions and Kougaryu is the one establishment that serves the best takoyaki in the city, to such an extent that it has been featured in several local magazines and TV shows. While the space is small and more like a food stall than an elaborate restaurant, you are in for a roller coaster ride of flavours. You can gauge its simplicity by observing that all meals are served to guests in disposable plates. The soft texture of the meat is perfectly balanced with the crunchiness of the vegetables and the sweet and sour spices and sauces wonderfully compliment all of the ingredients. You might just find yourself asking for another helping.
The icing on the cake is the fact that this filling and thoroughly delicious snack will cost you less than five dollars. What more could one ask for? The only downside to visiting places like Kougaryu is that there are close to zero options for vegetarians. However, if you like experimenting with food, you are in heaven. The location of this no-fuss eatery is an added advantage as America-mura is a touristy paradise in the heart of the city.
