As mythology goes, when Ravana made a second attempt to install the Atmalinga in Lanka, Narada alerted the gods about his journey via Gokarna. Lord Vishnu then designed a plot and convinced boy Ganesha to help execute it. Realizing that Ravana was a devout practicing Brahmin, Lord Vishnu cast his Chakra in a way to eclipse the sun. The illusion of dusk prompted Ravana to offer sandhya vandana (evening prayers). In order to not keep the Atmalinga on the ground, he called out to a young monk and requested him to hold his possession until his prayers. That young monk, an avatar of Lord Ganesha, deceived Ravana and put the Atmalinga on the ground, which thus became its final place of worship. Read less
