The gods, who did not want him to have the all powerful lingam, realized a weakness in him, and played a trick that made him forget the real purpose of his Tapasya. Thus, when Lord Shiva appeared to fulfil the wish, Ravana instead asked to take Parvati to Lanka. Since a wish must be granted, Parvati agreed with a condition that Ravana must maintain his dharma (sense of righteousness) throughout the journey to his kingdom. En route though, Ravana met and fell in love with Mayasur's daughter and princess Mandodari. When Parvati confronted him, Ravana tried to use force to take her along. That prompted Parvati to don a ferocious avatar making Ravana realize his folly and respectfully escort her back to Lord Shiva. Read less

According to Indian mythology, as told by a few locals in Gokarna, it was Parvati who proposed marriage to Lord Shiva. She is worshipped for the wisdom she displayed to help her husband keep his word and yet follow her dharma. Ravana's first attempt to procure the Atmalinga failed miserably (as explained here in detail). When he relentlessly prayed (called Tapasya in mythological terms) to Lord Shiva, he was granted a wish.

Tamra Gouri Temple is hosted inside the Mahabaleshwar temple compound itself. The statue of Parvati holding flowers in devotion stands on the eastern side, behind the Atmalingam. The goddess is believed to have judged the significance of Gokarna versus Kashi (Varanasi) and the temple depicts this with an idol of her holding a balance. Since then, Gokarna is also referred to as south Kashi.
