Just 2 km to the north of the Arch of Triumph lies Piaţa Presei Libere where the renowned House of the Free Press stands. Its construction was completed in 1956 in Soviet-style and its central tower was the tallest in the city until 2007. Its original function was to house all the main newspapers in the same building so that they could easily be controlled by the authorities. Ironically enough, after the end of communism, the building that previously served as an instrument of control was renamed as the House of the Free Press. It is still the headquarters of the main press companies of the region. In the middle of the square, originally a statue of Lenin was displayed, which was removed after the revolution and is soon to be replaced with a new memorial dedicated to all the people who fought against the communist regime.
