If you’re not a history buff and places like Canterbury or Oxford do not excite you, then Brighton is the place for you. Once a sleepy fishing village, Brighton is one of England’s most vibrant sea-side towns now. The Lanes—a tangle of alleys—are full of little shops that could keep you busy for a few days. It’s home to hundreds of independent cafes, quirky restaurants, small B&Bs, vintage stores and experimental boutiques. If you want to relax at the beach, Brighton does not disappoint on that front. Brighton’s pebbled beach is choc-a-bloc with people trying to get a tan under the elusive English sun. It is possible to swim, surf, and fish in the sea here. A little further, there is an area designated as a nudist beach. The pier is full of kitschy attractions—everything from carousels and soft-serve ice creams to casinos and arcade games is on offer. You must sample a plate of typical English fish and chips when you’re in Brighton.
