The waiting period surrounding A.J. Brown's future may finally be nearing its end. For months, the Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots have been connected in trade discussions involving the star wide receiver. With June 1 already here, a key financial hurdle that delayed any potential move is now out of the way. The Eagles can spread Brown's dead-cap hit across multiple seasons, creating significant financial flexibility. That shift has intensified expectations that New England could soon make its move, with one reported asking price now emerging as the likely cost of doing business.

Why is a 2028 first-round pick reportedly the price for A.J. Brown?

The market for Brown has changed considerably over the past several months. Early in the process, several teams were viewed as possible landing spots. As time passed, however, interest appeared to cool around the league, leaving New England in the strongest position to negotiate a deal. That does not mean Philadelphia is willing to discount one of the league's most productive receivers.According to NFL insider Jason La Canfora, league executives believe the Eagles are still positioned to receive a premium return.
"One general manager, who is not involved in the process but has been in contact with several parties who are, said: ‘I hear it’s New England for a 2028 first-round pick. He’s a good football player, but that’s a helluva deal for (Eagles GM) Howie (Roseman),'” La Canfora reported. From Philadelphia's perspective, the logic is straightforward. Brown remains one of the NFL's most dangerous offensive weapons when healthy. Even amid reported frustration during the 2025 season, his production and reputation have not diminished. If the Eagles are moving a three-time All-Pro, they are determined to extract maximum value. The Patriots also offer a natural trade partner. Brown previously played under head coach Mike Vrabel during their time together in Tennessee, and New England's front office has spent the offseason searching for proven receiving help.

Should New England pay that price to strengthen its championship hopes?

A future first-round pick is never a small investment, particularly for a franchise still building around a young quarterback. Yet the timing matters. The Patriots believe they are entering a competitive window with Drake Maye at the center of the project. While they added Romeo Doubs earlier in the offseason, the offense still lacks a proven No. 1 target capable of changing defensive game plans every week. That is where Brown's value becomes difficult to ignore. The reported compensation is a 2028 first-round selection, not an immediate premium asset. If New England develops into the contender it expects to become over the next two seasons, that pick could fall much later in the draft order, reducing its overall value. For a team aiming to compete deep into January, proven elite talent often costs more than draft projections. Brown would immediately become Maye's most reliable weapon and give the Patriots an offensive centerpiece around whom they could build. The price may be steep. But if New England truly views itself as a Super Bowl contender, passing on a player of Brown's caliber could prove even more costly.
