In a historic move aimed at tackling mounting judicial pendency, the Centre has expanded the Supreme Court's sanctioned strength from 34 to 38 judges—the highest in the court's history. Following the ordinance issued by President Droupadi Murmu, five new judges have been appointed to the apex court, including four High Court Chief Justices and Senior Advocate V Mohana. The expansion comes as the Supreme Court faces a backlog of over 93,000 pending cases and is expected to enhance judicial efficiency and case disposal.
