Pressure? Or opportunity? Number 4 is a critical position, especially in England, where the batter gets to play the semi-new ball and also the spinners. For India, that position has given them trouble in the past. In the last series against England, Virat Kohli batted at 4 and averaged 27.66 across 9 innings. But in 2018, that average was as high as 64. In the series prior to that, Kohli averaged 13.4 in 2014 while Sachin Tendulkar averaged 37.28 in 2011. So in adversity, lies an opportunity and Gill would be looking to make a mark.

Might be worth a debate. No complaints against Rahul or Sudharsan, but given Gill's proficiency in white-ball cricket, won't the captain serve better as an opener across formats? One can understand that earlier, because of Rohit Sharma, Gill was pushed down, but it just seems that Gill and Jaiswal are natural openers. So those two and Sudharsan can form the top 3 while Rahul can slot in at 4, actually across all formats. Point to ponder. Nothing to take anything away from Rahul though.
Chris Woakes to Shubman Gill, Full and straight, defended solidly. Nice, tidy maiden.
