New Zealand began the day still trying to complete their first innings and were eventually bowled out for 113, giving England a slim lead of 27. Ollie Robinson claimed his first five-wicket haul at Lord's and his first since 2022, while Josh Tongue quickly removed overnight batters Glenn Phillips and Nathan Smith.
England's second innings was held together by debutant Emilio Gay, whose elegant 57 stood out amid the carnage. The left-hander shrugged off a first-innings failure to compile the highest score of the match and become the first England opener to register a home debut fifty since 2003. Yet even his effort could not prevent another dramatic collapse as England lost four wickets in the space of 11 deliveries.
Nathan Smith starred for New Zealand with a career-best 6-70, despite Matt Henry being hampered by back spasms and dropped catches costing the visitors crucial chances. But New Zealand's hopes suffered a severe setback in the final session. Tom Latham fell cheaply, nightwatchman Will O'Rourke followed, and Kane Williamson's dismissal to Tongue left the tourists 36-3 and needing 218 more runs.
With rain forecast and variable bounce increasing, England head into the third day with one hand firmly on the contest.

With 17 wickets falling on Friday after 16 on the opening day, criticism of the lively Lord's pitch intensified. England's pacers then struck three times in the final hour, leaving Devon Conway unbeaten on 12 and New Zealand facing a daunting task heading into a rain-threatened third day.
