AUS vs SL highlights, T20 World Cup 2026: Sri Lanka beat Australia by 8 wickets to enter Super Eight

Australia vs Sri Lanka highlights, T20 World Cup 2026: Pathum Nissanka produced a sensational unbeaten century to power Sri Lanka to an emphatic eight-wicket victory over Australia in their Group B clash at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Sunday. The commanding win sealed Sri Lanka’s place in the Super Eight stage of the T20 World Cup and left Australia staring at elimination.

Australia will be eliminated if Zimbabwe beat Ireland on Tuesday.

Chasing 182, Sri Lanka rode on Nissanka’s breathtaking 100 not out off just 52 balls, an innings studded with 10 fours and five sixes at a strike rate of 192.31. He anchored the chase to perfection, first stitching a 97-run stand with Kusal Mendis and then finishing the job in style alongside Pavan Rathnayake. The hosts raced to 184/2 in just 18 overs, maintaining a run rate of 10.22.

Earlier, Australia posted a competitive 181 all out in their 20 overs after a blazing start. Skipper Mitchell Marsh (54 off 27) and Travis Head (56 off 29) tore into the Sri Lankan attack during a 104-run opening stand inside nine overs. At 104/0, Australia looked set for a mammoth total.

However, Sri Lanka clawed their way back through Dushan Hemantha, who removed Head and later dismissed Marsh and Glenn Maxwell to finish with impressive figures of 3/37. Dunith Wellalage accounted for Cameron Green, while Dushmantha Chameera chipped in with two crucial wickets, including Marcus Stoinis and Josh Inglis. From 116/3, Australia kept losing wickets at regular intervals and failed to capitalise fully on their explosive start, eventually folding for 181.

In response, Sri Lanka suffered an early blow when Kusal Perera fell cheaply, but Nissanka quickly settled into rhythm. Mendis provided solid support with a fluent 51 off 38 balls before falling to Stoinis. By then, the platform had been laid. Rathnayake’s brisk 28 off 15 balls ensured there were no late hiccups as Sri Lanka completed the chase with 12 balls to spare.

First Zimbabwe, and now Sri Lanka — Australia’s campaign has unravelled dramatically. Once favourites, they now face the prospect of an early exit, while Sri Lanka march into the Super Eight with momentum firmly on their side.

DRINKS BREAK. 12 fours and 2 sixes in 36 balls. That's roughly a boundary every 3 balls. A mathematic demonstration of Australia's assault so far. The good thing from their point of view is that not too many shots have been played in anger. The Lankans have not bowled the right lines or lengths but from their point of view, the good thing is, the balls have started to stop and come onto the bat. So they will look for a breakthrough here and then put pressure on the new batters, much like how Zimbabwe did the other day. Dushan Hemantha has been given the ball now.

AUS vs SL T20 World Cup Live Score: 50 comes up for Australia in 5 overs
Australia came out all guns blazing in their do-or-die clash against Sri Lanka, with Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh producing a stunning powerplay assault. The opening pair raced to 50 without loss in just five overs, putting immediate pressure on the Sri Lankan attack.

Marsh set the tone in the very first over, smashing Dushmantha Chameera for a six and a four as Australia collected 16 runs. Head soon joined the party, whipping Chameera off his pads before taking on Maheesh Theekshana with a pair of boundaries. The surface looked true and batting-friendly, and the Australian openers made full use of it.

Head, who has struggled for big scores in recent T20Is, looked in ominous touch. He hammered Theekshana down the ground and then tore into Dasun Shanaka, launching him for a massive six over square leg before carving a four through the off-side. Marsh complemented him perfectly, rotating strike and punishing anything loose.

Sri Lanka’s problems deepened when Matheesha Pathirana pulled up in his follow-through and had to leave the field, leaving the hosts short of a key bowler. At the five-over mark, Australia were 50/0, with Head blazing away on 35 off 20 balls and Marsh providing solid support with 14 off 10, firmly seizing control of the contest.

Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to field first against Australia in the 30th match of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy on Monday.

After missing the first two matches, Australia skipper Mitchell Marsh returned to the squad as they made three changes to the playing XI, including him. Xavier Barlett and Cooper Conolly replace Matthew Renshaw, Matthew Kuhnemann and Ben Dwarshuis.

Meanwhile, co-hosts Sri Lanka made only one change as Kusal Janith Perera replaced Kamil Mishara.

Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka said, "We are going to bowl first. Yes, it's one of the most important games for us in the tournament. So, we are looking forward to that. We have made 1 change. Kusal Perera comes in for Kamil Mishara. Yes, a change at the top of the order."

Australia captain Mitchell Marsh said, “Yeah, it is a big game. Every game in the World Cup comes with great responsibility. We weren't at our best in the last game. We are looking forward to tonight. It is going to be a great challenge. Myself, Cooper Connolly, Xavier Bartlett come in."

Australia need to win this match as they suffered a defeat to minnows Zimbabwe in their previous match, while Sri Lanka have won both their matches so far. They are tied for the top spot with Zimbabwe with four points from two games, the same as Sri Lanka, who have one game in hand.

Australia vs Sri Lanka highlights, T20 World Cup 2026: Sri Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka won the toss and opted to bowl against Australia in their T20 World Cup match on Monday.

Sri Lanka replaced Kamil Mishara with Kusal Perera, while skipper Mitchell Marsh came back into the Australia XI after missing the side's first two matches, along with Cooper Connolly and Xavier Bartlett.

Pitch and Conditions:

Beautiful clear air, 24 degrees. 66 meters on one side, 68 on the other. 80 meters down the ground. 550 meters above sea level. It's a good pitch. You don't come to SL and expect to see a pitch without turn. Don't ask anymore. It will turn ever so slightly. It's a used pitch. You can see places with wear and tear which are patched up. Good covering of grass. Nice and hard. There's a lot more grass in line with the stumps than outside. There can be slight variable turn or pace on offer. Still think you can play your shots and enjoy yourself on this pitch.

Marsh: All okay, ready to go tonight. It's a big game, every game comes with great responsibility. Weren't at our best last game. Myself, Cooper Connolly and Xavier Bartlett come in.

Shanaka: We're going to bowl first. One of the most important games in the comp. One change - Kusal Perera comes in for Mishara.

Teams:

Australia: Mitchell Marsh (c), Travis Head, Cameron Green, Josh Inglis (wk), Tim David, Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, Cooper Connolly, Xavier Bartlett, Nathan Ellis, Adam Zampa.
