AUS vs SL highlights, T20 World Cup 2026: Sri Lanka beat Australia by 8 wickets to enter Super Eight

Australia vs Sri Lanka highlights, T20 World Cup 2026: Pathum Nissanka produced a sensational unbeaten century to power Sri Lanka to an emphatic eight-wicket victory over Australia in their Group B clash at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Sunday. The commanding win sealed Sri Lanka’s place in the Super Eight stage of the T20 World Cup and left Australia staring at elimination.

Australia will be eliminated if Zimbabwe beat Ireland on Tuesday.

Chasing 182, Sri Lanka rode on Nissanka’s breathtaking 100 not out off just 52 balls, an innings studded with 10 fours and five sixes at a strike rate of 192.31. He anchored the chase to perfection, first stitching a 97-run stand with Kusal Mendis and then finishing the job in style alongside Pavan Rathnayake. The hosts raced to 184/2 in just 18 overs, maintaining a run rate of 10.22.

Earlier, Australia posted a competitive 181 all out in their 20 overs after a blazing start. Skipper Mitchell Marsh (54 off 27) and Travis Head (56 off 29) tore into the Sri Lankan attack during a 104-run opening stand inside nine overs. At 104/0, Australia looked set for a mammoth total.

However, Sri Lanka clawed their way back through Dushan Hemantha, who removed Head and later dismissed Marsh and Glenn Maxwell to finish with impressive figures of 3/37. Dunith Wellalage accounted for Cameron Green, while Dushmantha Chameera chipped in with two crucial wickets, including Marcus Stoinis and Josh Inglis. From 116/3, Australia kept losing wickets at regular intervals and failed to capitalise fully on their explosive start, eventually folding for 181.

In response, Sri Lanka suffered an early blow when Kusal Perera fell cheaply, but Nissanka quickly settled into rhythm. Mendis provided solid support with a fluent 51 off 38 balls before falling to Stoinis. By then, the platform had been laid. Rathnayake’s brisk 28 off 15 balls ensured there were no late hiccups as Sri Lanka completed the chase with 12 balls to spare.

First Zimbabwe, and now Sri Lanka — Australia’s campaign has unravelled dramatically. Once favourites, they now face the prospect of an early exit, while Sri Lanka march into the Super Eight with momentum firmly on their side.

Dushmantha Chameera to Adam Zampa, OUT! AUSTRALIA HAVE BEEN BOWLED OUT FOR 181! Adam Zampa is gone and it will be another run out to close out the innings. On a length, outside off, 116.9 kph, Adam Zampa eases this through the covers. It is a no brainer to come back for the second but the fielder is up for it as well. Kamindu Mendis charges to the ball and returns the throw to the keeper Mendis, Kusal, with the throw coming right in front of the keeper. Kusal collects and whips the bails off, with Zampa nowhere in the frame.

AUS vs SL T20 World Cup Live Score: Australia lose Inglis and Maxwell in quick succession
Australia suffered a dramatic wobble as Josh Inglis and Glenn Maxwell fell in quick succession, handing Sri Lanka a timely boost in the middle overs.

Dushmantha Chameera struck first, removing Inglis with a well-directed short ball. Clocking 140kph and angling it across the right-hander, Chameera hurried Inglis into an awkward pull. The batter was rushed for pace, the top edge ballooning high into the air. Dunith Wellalage moved in from backward point and completed a simple catch. Chameera, visibly fired up, had a few words for Inglis as he celebrated with his teammates. Inglis departed for 27 off 22 balls, which included three boundaries, just as he was beginning to settle.

Sri Lanka tightened their grip almost immediately. Dushan Hemantha, already among the wickets, produced another breakthrough by dismissing the dangerous Glenn Maxwell. Tossing it up on off stump, Hemantha tempted Maxwell into the reverse sweep. The Australian all-rounder struck it flat and hard towards backward point, appearing to have cleared the infield comfortably. But Pathum Nissanka had other ideas.

Making amends for an earlier drop, Nissanka timed his leap to perfection, reaching high above his head to pluck a stunning catch. He tumbled to the ground but kept firm control of the ball, sparking jubilant celebrations. Maxwell walked back for 22 off 15 balls, with a four and a six to his name.

With two key wickets falling swiftly, Sri Lanka clawed their way back into the contest and shifted the momentum firmly in their favour.

A quick short ball, outside off, Josh Inglis goes for the pull instinctively. But he is beaten for pace - that's right - beaten for pace, with the speed gun reading 140 kph and gets a top edge which goes straight up in the air. Three fielders go for it - the bowler, the keeper and point. In the end, Dunith Wellalage calls for it coming in from point and takes it calmly. After a series of slower balls, Inglis was caught napping on this fast one. From 160/4, AUSTRALIA ARE NOW 174/6! 13 balls left.

Normally, it is he who flies, who leaps and makes gravity's definition questionable. Full, around middle and off, Glenn Maxwell gets down and employs the reverse sweep. It is played powerfully and the ball flies over backward point. But Pathum Nissanka flies to his left and takes a stunner with both hands, landing behind! The Lankans are celebrating but Maxwell is asked to wait. The third umpire is called to check the legality of the catch and the replay shows that Nissanka is in total control of the catch. Maxwell looks stone faced, but even he would have admired that effort. Take a bow, Pathum. An important 30-run stand is broken and AUSTRALIA ARE 160/5 AFTER 16.1 OVERS!

AUS vs SL T20 World Cup Live Score: Overs 7-13| 61 runs | 4 wickets

Overs 7 to 13 produced high drama as 61 runs and four wickets kept the contest finely balanced between Australia and Sri Lanka.

The phase began with Travis Head continuing his assault. He took Hemantha apart for 14 runs in an over, racing to a 27-ball fifty and ensuring Australia surged past the 100-run mark in just 8.2 overs. The momentum was firmly with the visitors as the opening stand flourished.

But Hemantha had the last laugh. He broke the partnership by dismissing Head for a blistering 56, triggering a sudden shift in momentum. The breakthrough opened the door for Sri Lanka’s spinners, and Dunith Wellalage walked through it. Cameron Green, looking to force the pace, was stumped after being beaten in flight — back-to-back wickets that brought the hosts roaring back.

Mitchell Marsh, however, kept Australia afloat. The skipper hammered his way to a 25-ball half-century, counter-attacking with authority even as wickets tumbled around him. Sri Lanka’s persistence paid off when they reviewed successfully for an LBW against Marsh, with ball-tracking confirming the decision.

There was more drama when Kusal Mendis missed a stumping opportunity against Josh Inglis — a rare lapse behind the stumps that could prove costly. Yet Sri Lanka refused to relent. Kamindu struck to remove the dangerous Tim David, further tightening the screws.

From a position of dominance, Australia suddenly found themselves in a gripping middle-overs battle, with Sri Lanka’s spin trio dragging the contest back into contention.

DRINKS BREAK. The camera pans onto Mitchell Marsh who is looking very pensive outside the Aussie dressing room. At 104/0 in the 9th over, dreams of 250 were being woven. All of a sudden, 180 may be a tall ask. Aiming for the moon and running out of oxygen halfway? It has become a different ball game altogether. The hard, new ball was flying, but after that, forget the boundaries, the runs have dried up. 39/4 in the last 6 overs! The ball is stopping, holding on the surface and turning a bit as well. Australia might want to revisit what Sikandar Raza said in his post-match presentation the other day - if you look at 190 now, you are going to be 140 all out.

Australia vs Sri Lanka highlights, T20 World Cup 2026: Sri Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka won the toss and opted to bowl against Australia in their T20 World Cup match on Monday.

Sri Lanka replaced Kamil Mishara with Kusal Perera, while skipper Mitchell Marsh came back into the Australia XI after missing the side's first two matches, along with Cooper Connolly and Xavier Bartlett.

Pitch and Conditions:

Beautiful clear air, 24 degrees. 66 meters on one side, 68 on the other. 80 meters down the ground. 550 meters above sea level. It's a good pitch. You don't come to SL and expect to see a pitch without turn. Don't ask anymore. It will turn ever so slightly. It's a used pitch. You can see places with wear and tear which are patched up. Good covering of grass. Nice and hard. There's a lot more grass in line with the stumps than outside. There can be slight variable turn or pace on offer. Still think you can play your shots and enjoy yourself on this pitch.

Marsh: All okay, ready to go tonight. It's a big game, every game comes with great responsibility. Weren't at our best last game. Myself, Cooper Connolly and Xavier Bartlett come in.

Shanaka: We're going to bowl first. One of the most important games in the comp. One change - Kusal Perera comes in for Mishara.

Teams:

Australia: Mitchell Marsh (c), Travis Head, Cameron Green, Josh Inglis (wk), Tim David, Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, Cooper Connolly, Xavier Bartlett, Nathan Ellis, Adam Zampa.

Sri Lanka: Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Perera, Kusal Mendis (wk), Pavan Rathnayake, Dasun Shanaka (c), Kamindu Mendis, Dunith Wellalage, Dushan Hemantha, Dushmantha Chameera, Maheesh Theekshana, Matheesha Pathirana.
