The Ayurvedic herbs that can help control hypertension

High blood pressure, or hypertension, is more than just a number on a monitor. It’s a silent condition that slowly wears down the heart, arteries, and kidneys. This disease is responsible for about 18 million deaths every year, according to a study published in BMC Public Health. Ayurveda looks at it differently. It sees hypertension as an imbalance in the body’s energy systems, which is triggered by stress, poor diet, or disturbed sleep.
Ayurveda expert Dr Anurati, who works in the field of PCOS, diabetes, and gut health, shares eight herbs that she believes can help bring the system back into balance. Each herb, she believes, works in its own unique way to calm the mind, some strengthen the heart, and some help the body release excess fluid.

Arjun - 10/10

Dr Anurati calls Arjun (Terminalia arjuna) a perfect ten for cardiovascular health. It strengthens the heart muscle, improves blood flow, and helps regulate blood pressure naturally. The bark of the Arjun tree is rich in compounds that support cardiac tone and help reduce LDL cholesterol, making it one of Ayurveda’s strongest natural cardio-protectives.

3/11

Ashwagandha - 8/10

Stress is a silent driver of hypertension. Ashwagandha works by calming the body’s stress response. It helps when the hypertension is stress-induced, experts explain. Its adaptogenic properties help the body adapt to mental and physical stress, indirectly supporting balanced blood pressure.

4/11

Punarnava - 7/10

When the body retains excess fluid, it puts pressure on the heart. Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa) helps prevent that. It’s known for its diuretic action, helping the body expel excess water and sodium through urine. This, in turn, eases the strain on the cardiovascular system. Experts note that its effect is “indirect but significant.”

5/11

Sarpagandha - 9/10

Sarpagandha (Rauwolfia serpentina) is one of the oldest herbs used for controlling high blood pressure. Its active compound, reserpine, has been scientifically studied for its strong antihypertensive action. Dr Anurati rates it 9/10 but emphasizes that it should be used under supervision due to its potency.

6/11

Jatamansi - 8/10

Known as a natural tranquilizer, Jatamansi (Nardostachys jatamansi) has long been valued for its calming effects on the nervous system. It helps soothe the mind, reduce stress, and stabilize blood pressure, making it particularly beneficial for individuals experiencing anxiety or emotional strain. The herb promotes deep, restful sleep, allowing the body and mind to rejuvenate overnight. By preventing sudden spikes in blood pressure often triggered by mental or emotional stress, Jatamansi supports overall cardiovascular health. Regular use of this herb, under proper guidance, can improve mood, enhance mental clarity, and contribute to a sense of inner calm, making it a valuable addition to natural wellness practices.

7/11

Tulsi - 6/10

Holy basil, or Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum), is a household herb with a deep impact on stress regulation. Its adaptogenic and antioxidant properties lower cortisol levels, indirectly helping blood pressure stay in check.

8/11

Triphala - 7/10

A blend of three fruits, Amalaki, Bibhitaki, and Haritaki; Triphala helps cleanse the body and supports vascular health. Experts note that while it may not directly lower blood pressure, it improves overall circulation, reduces inflammation, and supports healthy arteries.

9/11

Brahmi - 7/10

Mental tension often pushes blood pressure up. Brahmi helps by relaxing the mind and improving focus. Dr Anurati rates it seven on ten for its ability to reduce anxiety and mildly support blood pressure through its effect on the nervous system.
