Common cold or Allergic Rhinitis? Here's how to distinguish

We all tend to interpret sneezing, a runny nose, and congestion as a common cold. But although symptoms may be similar, causes may vary. What is a viral cold can be an allergy, and mix-ups between them may result in ineffective treatment or extended distress! Common cold and Rhinitis can affect the respiratory tract, but that is where the story is the same. Cold is most often due to viruses and resolves itself within days, but rhinitis results from pollens, dust, or pet fur, so it is very important to know the difference. Scroll down to know how you can distinguish between them.

2/7

What is a common cold?

According to CDC (Centers for Disease Control and prevention), a cold is a viral infection of the upper respiratory tract, commonly known as URI. They usually last less than a week and are caused by different respiratory viruses. It primarily affects the nose, throat, sinuses, and windpipe. Common cold is probably the most frequently encountered infectious syndrome in humans, and adults typically experience 2-3 colds per year. Its symptoms begin 1-3 days after infection and last about 7-10 days, though some elements may persist longer.

3/7

Symptoms of common cold

A blocked or runny nose
Sneezing
A sore throat
Hoarse voice
Cough
Feeling tired or unwell
A loss of taste and smell
Aching muscles
Symptoms of a common cold may last longer in young children. They may also be irritable have difficulty sleeping or breathing through their mouth.

4/7

What is Rhinitis?

Allergic rhinitis is where your nose gets irritated by something you are allergic to, such as pollen, causing sneezing and other symptoms. Rhinitis translates to “inflammation of the nose”, caused by airborne allergens. The nose produces mucus to trap dust and allergens and keep them from getting into the lungs.

5/7

Most common symptoms of Rhinitis

Rhinitis symptoms are typical of a cold or any other allergies, including:
Itching in the nose and eyes
sneezing
stuffy nose
congestion
runny nose
phlegm in the throat
postnasal drip

6/7

Precautions to take for common cold and Rhinitis

Maintain good hygiene by using sanitizers when soap is not available

Avoid touching your face, especially eyes and nose

Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds

Regularly clean frequently touched surfaces (door handles, phones, and remotes)

Stay indoors during high pollen count days

Keep windows closed during spring or dry season

7/7

When necessary, use preventive medicine

For common cold: Vitamin C, zinc and steam inhalation may help with early symptoms
For Rhinitis: Nasal corticosteroids and decongestants (all as per doctor’s advice)
