We all have some fond memories of dunking in those dumplings! Those hot, steamy, sweet and savoury dumplings always won our hearts with their lip-smacking taste and amazing soft and crunchy texture. Dumplings are one of the most loved delicacies around the world.

There’s a common myth that dumplings hail from Asia, but you will be amazed to see how there are several variants of dumplings across the world, which have been a part of their culinary legacy. From Poland to Italy to Asian countries, dumplings have turned out to be a staple food of many countries and with culinary innovations, the love for this scrumptious delight has encapsulated people to fall in love with it!

An authentic Polish delicacy, Pierogi is a delicious dumpling stuffed with curd cheese and potato. Unlike the other dumplings around the world, which pinch your palate with spices, this traditional Polish delight is made with a creamy filling. Prepared by using an unleavened dough filled in with both sweet and savoury stuffing made with potato, minced meat, cheese, sauerkraut or fruit, which is further cooked in water and pan fried in a butter onion mixture. The way of serving is also unique; the sweet Pierogi is served with sugary melted butter, whereas the savoury and meaty one is served with creamy sour cream.

​Vareniky from Ukraine

There can’t be a better sweet and creamy indulgence like this delicacy. Vareniky is a dumpling from Ukraine, which is mostly made with cherries and berries. However there are other savoury variations of this dish that are worth-relishing. Traditionally, this delight is made as a dessert by preparing a stuffing with fruits such as sour cherry, blueberries, along with sweet cottage cheese, cloves, lemon juice, and sugar. However, if you want to make it with a twist of mild spices, it can be made with salmon, meat, chopped onions, cheese pepper and dill.

Rissole a traditional snack from the land of Portugal. Deep fried and stuffed with minced meat, corn, cheese and a melange of spices. It is nearly impossible to talk about dumplings without mentioning Asian countries like China and Japan. Shumai is a steamed meat dumpling, which owes its origin to China. These are popularly known as Dimsums. There are several variations of this dish made with shrimps, chicken, pork, veggies etc. Steamed to perfection these are served with spicy chili and soy--based condiments.
