Sister act: Kajol and Rani’s Ashtami saree looks steal the spotlight

Durga Puja is never just a festival—it’s an emotion, a celebration of culture, tradition, and timeless style. And when two of Bollywood’s most beloved sisters, Kajol and Rani Mukerji, step out for the sacred Shubho Ashtami rituals, you know fashion is going to meet festivity in the grandest way. This year, like always, the two celebrated at the North Bombay Sarbojanin Durga Puja, their very own family pandal, which has been a Mumbai landmark since its inception in 1947 by Padmashri Shashadhar Mukerji, their grandfather. Over the decades, it has grown into one of the city’s grandest pujas, where legacy and glamour walk hand in hand.

Rani’s regal red moment

Rani Mukerji has always had a flair for understated drama, and this Ashtami, she leaned into her classic style with a bold, festive choice. Draped in a House of Masaba Red Silk Foil Printing Zari Bird Tales Saree from the brand’s festive couture line ‘Varakh’ (₹45,000), she looked every bit the queen that her name suggests. The luminous red with intricate foil work brought alive the vibrancy of the occasion, while her styling, fine jewellery and a statement bindi, was perfectly in tune with her signature preference for traditional glamour.

3/6

Timeless silhouettes

Rani has always been known for her love of rich textiles and timeless silhouettes. Whether it’s her Sabyasachi silks or opulent Banarasis, she never shies away from celebrating her Bengali heritage through clothing. This Ashtami look was yet another reminder that her fashion vocabulary is deeply rooted in cultural pride, with a dash of contemporary sparkle.

Kajol’s modern traditional vibe

If Rani plays the regal card, Kajol is the sister who brings a touch of playfulness to her festive looks. This year, she chose a House of Masaba Mauve Moon Garden Tissue Saree (₹38,000), pairing it with a custom blouse that struck the perfect balance between tradition and modernity. Her jewellery, from Karishma Joolry, and the floral ear studs added whimsy, while her arms stacked with bangles exuded festive energy. The finishing touch? A statement bindi from The Bindi Project, proof that some traditions never go out of style.

5/6

Perfect marriage

Kajol’s personal style has always leaned toward effortless and fuss-free elegance. Whether she’s spotted in simple cottons at home pujas or bold silks at red carpets, Kajol embraces comfort without compromising on charm. This Ashtami look reaffirmed her ability to modernise tradition without stripping it of its essence.

6/6

United in their love for sarees

What makes the Mukerji sisters’ festive appearances so special is the way they honour both their family’s heritage and their personal style. At their own family pandal, the two perfectly complemented each other, Rani embodying deep-rooted, regal tradition in red, and Kajol offering a softer, contemporary take in mauve tissue. And yet, they both stood united in their love for sarees, their bindis, and the cultural fabric of Durga Puja.

As the sisters posed amid the grandeur of the North Bombay Sarbojanin Puja, they weren’t just showcasing House of Masaba’s festive couture - they were celebrating a family tradition that has spanned generations. On Shubho Ashtami, Kajol and Rani showed us that true style isn’t about trends alone; it’s about heritage, identity, and honouring your roots with pride.
