Kamal Haasan turns 71: Revisiting the timeless films that defined Indian cinema’s most versatile actor

Kamal Haasan is the epitome of an actor in the history of Indian cinema. He made his debut as a child in 'Kalathur Kannamma' and has earned a permanent place in the hearts of fans with his excellent performance. It can be said that he has single-handedly shaped the growth and transformation of Tamil cinema for decades. Kamal Haasan celebrates his 71st birthday today, while social media is flooded with wishes for the legendary actor. On the occasion of his birthday, let's once again remember five films that were milestones in Kamal Haasan's career, and the amazing characters he portrayed in them.

2/6

'Nayakan'

Kamal Haasan's portrayal of Velu Nayakkan in this film, directed by Mani Ratnam, is considered one of the finest performances in Indian cinema. Kamal Haasan conveyed the story of an ordinary young man who steps into the world of crime after his father's death and becomes a hero to the people there with the most nuanced emotions. His body language, vocal range, and emotional depth established him as a world-class actor. 'Nayakan' earned Kamal Haasan a National Award.

3/6

'Mahanadi'

In the film 'Mahanadi', directed by Shanthana Bharathi, Kamal Haasan plays a father who has lost hope in life. He very naturally conveys the pain and stress of a father who is wrongly imprisoned and loses his children. The pain expressed in his voice, “Will the child who has gone away return?” and the silence that follows moments that melt the hearts of the audience. The film 'Mahanadi' is a wonderful work that reveals Kamal Haasan's social consciousness and humanity.

4/6

'Anbe Sivam'

Kamal Haasan's character Nallasivam in the film 'Anbe Sivam' directed by Sundar C, highlighted the philosophy of life with subtle humor. A man who has experienced his physical injuries, past pains, and social injustices eventually reaches a point where he believes that love is God. Although 'Anbe Sivam' initially failed to make a mark at the box office, it later became a time-honored cult classic. The philosophy of 'Anbe Shivam' continues to resonate in the minds of fans to this day.

5/6

'Thevar Magan'

Directed by 'Bharathan', 'Thevar Magan' has the story written by Kamal Haasan himself. The film revolves around the relationship between a modern son named Sakthivel, played by Kamal Haasan, and a traditional father named Periyasamy, played by Sivaji Ganesan. Kamal Haasan's transformation as he takes charge of the village after his father's death is very powerful. The emotions he expresses, the tear-filled scenes, and the realistic expression mixed with the scent of the rural soil made 'Thevar Magan' a timeless film.

6/6

'Moondram Pirai'

Directed by Balu Mahendra, 'Moondram Pirai', a heart-wrenching love story, is the pinnacle of Kamal Haasan's gentle acting skills. Playing a teacher who takes care of a woman who has lost her memory, he conveys love, sacrifice, and heartache in a very profound way. The tears welling up in Kamal Haasan's eyes in the film's climax were not acting; they were the height of emotion. 'Moondram Pirai' earned Kamal Haasan a National Award and the eternal love of his fans.
