The film that changed everything

'Maine Pyar Kiya' (1989) wasn't just a hit movie; it became a cultural touchstone in the late '80s. It was Sooraj Barjatya's first film as a director, and it made stars out of Salman Khan and Bhagyashree. It also introduced a bunch of fresh faces, like Pervien Dastur, who played Seema, Suman’s stylish and witty friend. The movie crushed it at the box office and became a Bollywood classic, but Pervien, unlike the other actors, pretty much disappeared from the public eye after that.

From theater to Sooraj Barjatya’s sets

Pervien grew up in Mumbai without any ties to the film biz. It all kicked off in college when she started modeling and then got into theater. According to DNA, she acted in English plays with big names like Naseeruddin Shah and Pearl Padamsee. Sooraj Barjatya spotted her at one of these shows. He liked her stage presence and her funny timing. Soon after, he talked to her dad, Raj Kumar Barjatya. He got lunch with Pervien and offered her a part in 'Maine Pyar Kiya.' Pervien made ₹25,000 for her first flick. It wasn't much compared to Bhagyashree's ₹1.5 lakh. Even so, it changed everything for her.

Stardom and a sudden exit

After the massive success of 'Maine Pyar Kiya,' Pervien was noticed and appreciated by audiences. Offers poured in—but none excited her. In an interview with Bollywood Thikana, she revealed, “Jo offers miles; there was no fun in that. Maybe I was spoiled by Rajshri.” Disenchanted with the repetitive and shallow roles coming her way, Pervien decided to take a step back from films, despite having the attention and opportunity most newcomers could only dream of.

4/5

A new flight path and missed opportunities

Choosing a path far removed from the glamour of Bollywood, Pervien became an air hostess with Air India—a decision that symbolized both her independence and her quest for satisfaction beyond fame. Interestingly, she was initially signed opposite Salman Khan again for Suryavanshi (1992), but was later replaced by Amrita Singh. Similarly, she missed out on working with Aamir Khan in Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke, as she had already accepted her airline appointment; the role eventually went to Navneet Nishan. She was also offered the sitcom 'Zabaan Sambhaal Ke,' which later featured Tanaaz Currim Irani.

5/5

Life beyond the limelight

In 1992, Pervien married model and actor Shahrukh Irani, with whom she shares two daughters. Today, she leads a content life away from the camera, focusing on her family and creative pursuits. A certified hairstylist, her Instagram feed showcases her talent with happy clients and elegant hairstyles. While her time in Bollywood was brief, Pervien Dastur’s story remains a fascinating reminder that not every actor seeks the arc lights; some find fulfillment in rewriting their own scripts.
