Ludhiana: A retired decorated police officer took his own life on Saturday after a family feud escalated into terrifying threats against his new wife and young children.
Gurdev Singh, 70, a former Punjab Police assistant sub-inspector, left a note alleging that his two sons from the previous marriage had threatened to burn down his home after targeting him with a campaign of intimidation.
Police found this note on the scene of suicide at the ex-ASI’s house in Mahavir Colony, Bhamian Khurd. Following the discovery and statements from Gurdev’s wife, Jamalpur police filed a first-information report (FIR) charging his sons, Lovepreet Singh and
Harpreet Singh, with abetment to suicide.
The former cop’s second wife, Kiran Devi, has told police the tension began after her husband evicted his sons from the first floor of the family home for bringing various women to the property.
Following their eviction, the sons allegedly launched a campaign of harassment against their father. In one recent incident, the brothers reportedly forced their way into the home and threatened to burn it down unless Gurdev and his current family vacated the premises.
“The accused had been threatening and harassing the family continually,” Kiran Devi said, claiming that the ongoing pressure had led to her husband’s death.
Kiran and Gurdev have two daughters, aged 5 years and 10 months.
Jamalpur police station's officer in charge, sub-inspector Parmodh Raj, said police had charged the brothers under sections 108 (abetment to suicide) and 3(5) (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Police are searching for the two suspects.
