Senior Congress neta K P Dhanapalan no more
Kochi: Senior Congress functionary and former MP K P Dhanapalan passed away at a private hospital in North Paravur early on Saturday after developing sudden physical uneasiness. He was 76.
Known for his organisational skills, Dhanapalan's public life spanned over five decades. He took his first political steps as a grassroots activist of Kerala Students Union (KSU), eventually rising to become the Ernakulam district Congress committee (DCC) President and a KPCC vice-president. He was widely recognized for his institutional discipline and was regarded as a close and trusted associate of senior leader A K Antony.
Dhanapalan made a distinct mark in parliamentary politics by winning Chalakudy Lok Sabha seat in 2009. Known for his industrious nature and deep local roots, he served the constituency until 2014. Beyond parliament, his administrative footprint extended across local self-govt institutions as a long-time municipal councillor and former chairman of the North Paravur municipality as well as the head of the state cooperative milk federation, Milma.
Chief minister V D Satheesan expressed deep grief over the passing away of Dhanapalan, whom he described as a loyal Congress leader with a calm demeanour and unyielding fighting spirit. Prominent party colleagues, including Ramesh Chennithala and Shashi Tharoor, also condoled his demise, remembering him as a dedicated, selfless parliamentarian who prioritized the collective interest of the party and his electorate.
