MGU lets off Maharaja’s principal after finding lapse in Arsho Promotion

Kochi: Mahatma Gandhi University syndicate has let off the principal in-charge of Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam, with a warning after finding that former SFI secretary P M Arsho was promoted to the seventh semester of an integrated MA programme despite having only 10% attendance in the sixth semester.

The matter came to light following a complaint by the Save University Committee to the chancellor's office. The principal in-charge, Shajila Beevi S, had initially informed the university that the student had sufficient attendance. A subsequent college report, however, revealed that 27 days of attendance had been granted on account of union activities, against the permissible limit of 15 days under programme regulations.

The syndicate, which met on May 20, found a lapse on the part of the principal but stopped at issuing a reminder to exercise greater caution in future.

The KSU unit of Maharaja's College called the decision lenient and demanded a thorough investigation and strict action against those responsible. The Save University Committee urged the chief minister and higher education minister to remove Beevi from the post and initiate disciplinary action, alleging she had deliberately submitted misleading information to the chancellor's office.
