80 gharial hatchlings shifted to Palighat Rearing Centre

Jaipur: Eighty gharial hatchlings were transferred to the Palighat Gharial Rearing Centre this week, where they will be reared under conditions designed to closely replicate their natural habitat.The initiative is part of ongoing efforts to improve the survival and growth of the critically endangered species.The rearing centre has been upgraded with a range of facilities aimed at providing a suitable environment for the young reptiles. “New tanks equipped with thermal and daylight sources, wave makers, basking platforms, and security cameras have been installed to simulate natural riverine conditions. These arrangements will support the hatchlings’ physical development and help them adapt to conditions similar to those found in the wild,” Manas Singh, Divisional Forest Officer, said.A staff member said, water quality, a crucial factor in the successful rearing of gharials, is being maintained through an advanced reverse osmosis (RO) treatment system. The facility has been designed to ensure a steady supply of clean water and environmental conditions suited to the needs of the hatchlings.As part of the feeding programme, the young gharials will be provided with live fish. Wildlife experts say live feeding helps develop natural hunting instincts and allows the reptiles to retain their innate behavioural traits, which are essential for survival in their natural habitat.“The Palighat centre plays a key role in the conservation of gharials by providing specialised care during the early stages of life, when mortality rates are often high. We hope the successful transfer and scientific rearing of the hatchlings will strengthen ongoing conservation efforts and contribute to the long term recovery of gharial populations in the wild,” an official said.
