Silchar: Churaibari police on Wednesday seized codeine-based cough syrups worth Rs 1.5 crore, which were hidden inside a potato-laden truck at Churaibari, along the Assam-Tripura border, in Sribhumi. The driver of the vehicle, Yogesh Kumar (27), a Punjab resident has been arrested.During a routine inspection at Churaibari checkpoint, police intercepted a 12-wheel truck, which was travelling from Siliguri to Agartala, and seized 14,100 bottles of Eskuf cough syrup, concealed behind potato sacks.While 94 cartons, each containing 150 bottles, were recovered, officials said cough syrup worth Rs 1.5 crore had been seized.“The accused was transporting the narcotic substance through the truck. A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and further investigation is underway,” said Niranjan Das, in-charge of the Churaibari police watchpost.The driver, Kumar, is scheduled to be produced before the chief judicial magistrate's court on Thursday, officials said.
