Dehradun: A Rishikesh-based trader received an
extortion call from a person who claimed to be a member of the Portugal-based Rohit Godara gang and demanded Rs 50 lakh on Saturday.
The matter came to light after the trader lodged a police complaint on Monday evening. SI Viksit Panwar, investigating the case, said the complainant alleged that he received the threat call on Saturday through an online messaging app from a Portuguese number.
"The trader alleged that the caller addressed him by name and shared specific details about his children's school and other family members in a threatening manner. The caller then demanded Rs 50 lakh by Monday, warning him of dire consequences if the money was not arranged," Panwar said.
Panwar said that based on the complaint, a case had been registered under BNS sections 308(3) (extortion) and 351(3) (criminal intimidation). "A probe has been launched to identify and apprehend the accused for further legal action," he added.
