The mood outside Madison Square Garden was not as expected on Monday night, where excitement for the Knicks’ first NBA Finals home game in 27 years collided with heavy security measures tied to President
Donald Trump’s visit. Fans who had spent thousands of dollars to witness Game 3 against the San Antonio Spurs found themselves navigating checkpoints, fencing, and long delays before reaching their seats.
For many New Yorkers, this was supposed to be a celebration years in the making. The Knicks entered the night holding a 2-0 lead in the NBA Finals, and Manhattan had been buzzing for days. The conversations outside the arena shifted from basketball to security restrictions, canceled watch parties, and frustration over how difficult it had become to simply get inside Madison Square Garden.

President Trump arrived at Madison Square Garden shortly before 8 p.m. after traveling from Bedminster, New Jersey, aboard Marine One. His motorcade moved through Manhattan under tight security before reaching the arena roughly 30 minutes before tipoff.
The presidential visit triggered extensive security precautions around the Garden. Streets surrounding the venue were blocked off, anti-scale fencing lined the perimeter and fans encountered enhanced screening measures. The annual watch party outside the arena was also canceled.
“The NYPD, in coordination with the Secret Service, made the decision for Game 3, where we have a presidential visit, that we could not support watch parties right outside of the Garden,” NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said earlier in the day.
Inside and outside the arena, the impact was noticeable. Fans reported moving through multiple entrances and lengthy lines.
NYC reporter, Christopher Robbins, captured the atmosphere outside the MSG and shared on X, “POV you paid $10,000 for a Knicks ticket but can’t get into MSG.”
The atmosphere has been tense even before the opening tip, with reports suggesting many fans were still making their way through security checkpoints as game time approached.
Knicks fans react to Donald Trump’s MSG visit
The frustration spilled onto social media as Knicks supporters shared their thoughts while waiting outside the arena.
"Nah this too quiet. Vibes way off. I would turn back around and go tf home," @officerpetty310 wrote on X.
Others blamed the lengthy security process for changing the feel of what should have been a festive night.
"Trump killed the vibes 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 lol they gotta check every person going in," @DIRTYDADEWORLD shared.
One user focused on the cost that many fans paid to attend the game.
"Thanks to Trump, fans in New York, who paid thousands to see the Knicks, can’t even get into the arena in a timely fashion.
Trump is so selfish," @vijucharlie wrote.
Another post took a more sarcastic tone: "One thing bout trump he is really good at creating blockades. first the strait of hormuz and now MSG for the knicks game," @qwantkitty shared.
The reaction inside the arena reflected some of that frustration. When Trump appeared on the jumbotron during the national anthem, loud boos rolled through the sold-out Garden before attention quickly shifted back to the court. Knicks fans had waited decades for a Finals game at home. On a night meant to be remembered for basketball, many found themselves talking about everything but the game.
